Diverticulitis Support Group
Diverticulitis is a common disease of the bowel, in particular the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed. Diverticulitis most often affects middle-aged and elderly persons, though it can strike younger patients as...
I am 27 year old female that was diagnosed with Diverticulitis on 04/20/2022. There was a time back in 2018 where I was having bad abdominal pain, but neither I or the doctor could tell me what it was. I think that maybe that was when it started to form i assume. Now fast forward to now, it started on 04/16/2022. My family & I were enjoying our vacation at the cabin we rented at the lake. That day, I didnt eat a whole lot, just small portions, throughout the day. Later that day, I did have a lil sip of Crown but never finished it. I went to go lay down, I fell asleep, but later that night, I woke up sweating, though it was hot in the cabin. Now, around 3 am on 04/17/2022 is when the fiasco really started to begin. I vomited once, and just didnt feel like myself. I had to cut the vacation short & I went home. Later that day, i started feeling a little pain & I had a 100.3 fever, but I'm thinking maybe I got myself sick at the cabins cause I did shower & went outside right after, it was a little cool outside, plus I was drinking which means my pores were wide open, so I thought maybe that's what it was, or it could just be constipation. But things got worse as the next day went by. The next couple of days I was in very bad pain & never had a bowel movement since before the trip to the cabins. I couldnt eat anything. I tried some herbal tea that was suppose to help me use the bathroom, I tried Epsom Salt (yes it can be used as a laxative). Neither of them worked. I even tried Pepto to coat my stomach, that didnt work. I'm not sure if Miralax wouldve worked but I kinda regret not trying it. Anyways, nothing worked. Then finally on 04/20/2022 I went to the ER (vomited again while I was there, but it just liquids) & they diagnosed me with it. I am now currently trying to see a Gastroenterologist. I was told that a colonoscopy is highly recommended. My only concern is trying to avoid surgery. I am on anti biotics, I hope that surgery isnt needed but I do realize that the older I get, the worse it can get. This is definitely new to me & I am trying to accept this life change. I'm not an atheletic person but I feel that I do get my exercise from working two jobs. But I guess actually exercising is required now. My biggest challenge right now is knowing what to eat & what not to eat. I have scheduled an appointment with the doctor to discuss more about my condition & other questions I have, but now I wait to see if & when the doctor receieves & approve my appointment request. Since the ER visit, i couldnt eat anything for about 2 days. I put myself on a clear liquid diet. My body just wasnt accepting it. I vomited about 3-4 times. Then finally on 04/22/2022, I was able to keep down liquids. So I tried food, nothing crazy though, I had a craving for grapes (before I knew I'm not suppose to eat fruit with skin). I had no problem eating or keeping down the grapes, but I havent ate them since. There are these tv dinners that I like to eat called Michaelina's. I like the chicken alfredo with broccoli. I ate one of those & had no problem keeping it down. Only reason I ate this cause I literally hadnt ate in a few days. I'm not sure if its something I should eat because it is considered processed foods. But I did read that I could eat white meat & pasta, thats basically what the alfredo was. Now yesterday on 04/23/2022, I wanted to kind of test my appetite. My dad had got KFC, I know this was a bad choice of food to eat but I wanted to see if I could actually eat something different & if i could keep it down. I had one chicken tender with literally 2-3 spoonfulls of mac & cheese. I ate that with no problem. So now today on 04/24/2022, I had fruit this morning. But i just realized that I wasnt suppose to have strawberries :( and I love them. They were cut in half & I only ate a few. But now, no more strawberries for now on :( I just ate another alfredo tv dinner but afterwards I read that I'm not suppose to eat broccoli (the broccoli was cut up in small pieces in the alfredo). So now I'm sitting here trying to gather a list of things of what to eat & what not to eat. The problem I'm running into is that some of the sites are telling me that I need to be on a low fiber diet, but some are saying high fiber diet. Some are saying grains are good, some are saying no grains. So it can be a little confusing. I know most of my questions will be answered once I see the doctor but until then, I need some advice. Is there anyone that are already on a strict diet? Any recommendations on what to eat? And I also want to shed a little light on the medications. One of the medications Ciprofloxacin, has a side affect that I did notice this morning when I went to the bathroom. It turns your stool black & tarry. So of course I looked it up & pretty much says if this happens then go back to the ER immediately. And that's when I set up an appointment to see the doctor. If I dont get any response tomorrow which is Monday, I will be going back the ER. Is there also anyone that deals with University Hospital? I am a Georgia resident. I have been trying to find the right support groups & read others stories. I feel a little better knowing that I'm not alone with this & it is a whole community that has this. It kind of makes dealing with it a little easier. I'm not trying to make it seem like its a life or death thing, but I know that it could possibly lead to iother serious issues if I dont take care of myself correctly so this is definitely going to be a challenge for me, cause I know how I like to eat. Alot of my favorite foods I cant eat anymore & I have to be mindful of that at all times. Just like this morning i ate strawberries & I wasnt suppose to lol. So it is going to be a little challenging to watch what I eat. I hope that someone in this group can give me some good advice. I'm open to any advice & support :)

Name something you’ve gotten better at as you’ve gotten older.

The kind of meet I usually is ground like hamburger or turkey. Mild meat. I do eat spices. Just remember what makes you feel bad and avoid it for a while then try again. I can eat one serving a day of something rough but not twice in one day or I get an ache in the guts. Also aloe vera tablets help when I am sore which has not been in a long time. I take half dozen in the first day, maybe the second, then taper off. If the pain does not go away in about 4 or 5 days, I see a dr.
Hope my experiences help. I have delt with this longer than you have been alive. Take care. Mary
