A little while ago I started a topic on Atkins on here because I wanted to get a group of us who wanted to do it together and keep eachother motivated. I personally prefer the Atkins diet over the others that I've tried in the past because it's the easiest for me to stick to and get results from. Whether you're dieting to lose weight for a big event or trying to hopefully undergo a lifestyle change, it's HARD! When you're not used to eating healthy and in moderation and are probably metabolically challenged, ANY diet is tough to stick to! I don't care if you're low-carbing, low-fatting or whatever. Now with that said, I think its UNACCEPTABLE to join this support group (key word: support!) and inquire information about a particular diet and have someone take the time to put together information for you and have you then (for lack of better word) talk shit!
JUST TO CLEAR SOME THINGS UP:
Dr. Atkins did not die of a heart attack or anything heart-related. It is true that he had a heart-related condition called viral cardiomyopathy. As the name implies, it was caused by a virus in Dr. Atkins case and he has openly discussed it since his diagnosis 3 years before his death.
Dr. Atkins died because he slipped on ice and hit his head which caused him to hemorrhage. He slipped into a coma for 2 weeks and then died.
Dr. Atkins did not live his life obese. He was 6 feet tall and just like the rest of us, his weight varied. He ranged always between 180-195 and never fell into the obese category. Upon admission to the hospital, he weighed 195 pounds and over the course of 2 weeks he retained a massive amount of fluid and died weighing 258 pounds which obviously makes him categorically obese.
I hope this will clear up any myths and rumors regarding Dr. Atkins and the claim that his diet killed him.
I could go on and on about the Atkins diet because I have read the entire book and as a medical student that has studied metabolism at a level that is qualified to have an opinion on this matter, I have confirmed, verified and researched the medical basis of his diet and the information he presented in his book. FOR ME, I'm satisfied with what the diet has to offer and plan to follow it ALL THE WAY THROUGH which in the end is composed of a balanced and healthy lifestyle that no one could criticize if they took the time to read the book and learn what phase 4 is all about. Obviously many can and do abuse the rapid weight loss effects of Phase 1: Induction, but that's not Dr. Atkins fault.
SO, bottomline, go with what works for you and don't be NEGATIVE to others that are struggling with the same problem as you and are going about it a different way than you are. This is a SUPPORT group.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
People buy into all kinds of systems and books that are businesses.
I am sure most people don't look into things.
Saying "Woooo go!" doesn't really help people.
so all in all hun....ignore, ignore, ignore :)
all the best to you
Why come here then, if your mind is closed and you aren't going to provide credible info?
As for others? yes I have spoke my mind on my thoughts on some diets that I'm not fond of in a good approachable manner, not attacking them.
Atkins is solid, based on science and research... none of which is ever discussed here.
So, the usual recommendation is a low fat diet. However, the more research that I have done on my own, I am finding that we actually need a certain amount of fat to feel satisfied, so that we take in less calories overall. I find that interesting, since Atkins focuses less on fat intake and limits carbs and his diet is so successful! It makes sense! I am concerned that what I am recommending to my pt's is outdated information, on how to lose wt using a low fat diet.
In the end, its each individual's decision to make choices and become healthier, though. Exercise, less sugar, etc.
I must admit, though, I am terrible at following diets. :-( Our family does participate in Martial Arts twice weekly, and recently I made the decision to get on that treadmill! Thanks to those who inspired me!!! I have lose 6 lbs!
anyways I count calories and love it and works for me, so I guess if whatever people do is working then congrats as long as it's safe and not harming them internally
I am sure there are many people, like him, for whom the cheerleading isn't helpful.
However, it sure HELPED ME.
The emotional support and fellowship of DS is what saw me through the hard times and helped me to meet my weight loss goal. Now I am looking to the same for weight maintenance and other issues.
We each get different things from online communities. Like J4A, I don't rely on these posts for scientific info. I do my own research on scientific sites and never accept mere word of mouth as proof.
I come here for ideas, inspiration and mutual support. I think it's GREAT!!
Nobody ever says "Woooo go!" to me :(
Atkins emphasizes over and over talking to your doctor before starting this (or any diet)....the Atkins diet "has a strong blood pressure lowering effect and can easily convert blood pressure medications into an overdose. If you are currently taking any of these medications, you will need your doctor's help to adjust your doses"
"Before you start this or any program, go to your doctor to get your blood chemistries and lipid levels measured...these indicators often change with drastic dietary intervention.....you may later regret not having a "before" baseline to compare with your "after" results"
On Atkins your cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides "should begin improving steadily"......."high blood pressure and being overweight often go together"....."What happens to blood pressure on Atkins? It goes down. Nothing is more consistently or more rapidly observed than normalization of blood pressure"
As it would on most diets, I should think, since high blood pressure and being overweight go together.
The short answer? Talk to your doctor first! Atkins does reduce LDL, increases HDL, and reduces blood pressure....BUT if you are on any medications these will need to be monitored and adjusted as you go. I am not on any medications at all, but I did talk to my doctor and get all my baseline blood work-up levels prior to starting Atkins. It is rewarding to see the levels improve, but more than that, it is critical that you and your doctor be on the same page for your health.
