I had read an Dr Oz article on here and used to read one of his You on a diet books and he advice on avoiding the scale and use a tape measure for proper health path.
I am a scale addict for many years and now I want to stop using the scale and use other methods to determined my progress. I will calorie count and all..and want to break free from the scale obession.
The scale determine my moods..each time I weigh, morning, noon and sometimes at night..Its mind boggling...and want to break free from it. I will only weigh when I have a medical doctor visit..or should I tell my doctor my issue with it..that is the rough part.
I want to use a tape measure....clothing progress..lab test results..or my food journaling efforts,....
Does anyone use other methods than the scale?
I really want to break free from scales...

Usually I get a daily influx of emails on health topics. An article from Dr. Mercola really stood out recently though because it mentioned that fat cells have their own mitochondria. Not only was this the first I'd heard of this, he also mentioned that fat serves a purpose in our metabolism. Another new factoid for me. The bottom line for me was to appreciate that even our fat cells play a...

I just do not feel well and I really think that it's because I cried yesterday on my way to work about my Aunt who is in the hospital. I don't think that we will have her much longer. She is very frail. Now she needs help eating. So, this is the third time in a year that I felt this way after crying. I think crying releases toxins into my body. I also worked up a sweat at the gym...

I can tell when my clothes feel looser or tighter.
I am trying to have less binges. They have been more frequent lately. I guess when my leg hurts I eat more.
I guess whatever we do should be a pleasant experience or we won't keep at it.
My clothes also tell a story. Personally, I don't like a tape measure.
I'm a numbers person and I finally decided to use it like any other tool. I weigh every morning right after my shower. I also track my food on a separate website. And I wear a fitness tracker. Told you I was an addict ;)
I keep a worksheet and record the numbers each day. Doing this has helped me figure out a lot of things about what my body likes and doesn't and how long certain things take. For me, it takes about 2 days for a gain from bad food choices to show up. Too many carbs (over 150net grams for me) show up the next day in water weight. LOTS of green tea helps the water weight go away. There are a lot of little things I've figured out so I don't panic when I see a gain.
I think of it as just another tool like the speedometer on the car. If I look down and see that I'm speeding I don't think I'm a failure. I just change what I'm doing to get back to where I need to be.
Try not to focus too much on individual scale reading but the overall tends. You will have ups and downs throughout the week.
I weight myself every time I go to the Gym, but that works for me. I am usually able to tie my weight gain to things like pizza (and the salt induced water weight) or inactivity. I know that my weight can go up or down by a pound or more in any given day. If I waited to weigh myself once a month I'd be really annoyed if I had a bad diet day just before weigh in.
WE used to have a group here where we challenged ourselves to adopt better/healthier behaviors. We tracked things like getting enough fiber in our diets, drinking enough water, avoiding treats, stuff like that. That way we can track things we can control (our behavior) and then weight loss will follow.
Do what works for you!
Periodically though I slide into that "dieting to lose weight" mentality. I start eating badly, skipping meals, feeling deprived and head for a binge. Just going thru one of those phases now ;-(
Thank you for the reminder of what works - or at least works for me.
Time to get back to simply eating right and moving more. The weight will take care of itself.
I weigh daily..once in the morning, which I weigh less..and weigh before dinner and weigh more..Its weird....This year upgraded to a digital scale and always weigh more pm and less am..I never had this problem with my old scale that is a old fashion doctors scale with sliding block...
Speaking scales... Which scale do you all use?? Digital or non digital?? Thanks so much for your input..

Re: weighing less in the morning -- that's when I weigh too. Right after my shower and before breakfast. Do a search on "why do I weigh less in the morning". There's a whole science behind it that's really pretty interesting! I figure morning is when I'll get the most consistent result.
BUT
Even the scale was up...I lost 2 inches off my waist!! I am one happy chick!! :)
I weigh myself maybe once a month but go more by how my clothes fit and I stay the same weight give or take a few pounds as you can weigh yourself every day and always get a different number due to various things, water retention, time of the month etc and that's what drove me nuts and I was obsessed, once a week is good though to keep track.
