Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
Remission FOR ME is not depending on meds. I can handle the low carb diet, portion control, and exercise - I just want off the metformin. I know there is something with hormones that puts people into remission, but it also has something to do with not being able to eat as much. I have also spoke to people who the bypass did not cure them of diabetes, and I have also read stories where people had bypass but continued to overeat and they ended up right back where they started.
Sunn - I am only on 500mgs of metformin a day now. I was taking 250 mgs before breakfast and 250 mgs 12 hours later. Since starting back to work, I decided to eat less carbs for breakfast and lunch because the most I can walk is for 10 minutes at a time. So I eat most my carbs at dinner. The pill helps and so does the walk. I have been getting up earlier so I can walk before work. Not sure how long that will last once the cold weather sets in.
I am still in the process of learning how my system reacts. Yesterday my bedtime reading was 107. I knew that I needed to eat something so that my FBG were not too high. So I ate half of a peach and a tablespoon of peanut butter. This morning my FBG was 140. So I guess tonight I will have only some nuts and I will avoid the carbs of the 1/2 peach.
I have learned that my body does not want a bedtime snack. If I want low fasting, I can't eat anything after dinner or after 8pm and I haven't in almost a month. My FBS has been under 100 and I think the highest was 105. This morning it was 91. My doctor did ask me to set my alarm and test between 2 and 3am a couple of times for a week. My BS was in the 90's both times.
Have you tried not eating anything past 8pm?
"For patients with type 2 diabetes, remission may be attained, for example after bariatric/metabolic surgery or with lifestyle efforts such as weight loss and exercise. Non-diabetic glycemia resulting from ongoing medications or repeated procedures does not meet the definition of remission, as these interventions are considered treatment. Remission may also be considered an outcome of devices, such as gastric banding, only after the patient achieved a steady state and no longer requires repeated adjustments or replacements of the device."

So, I would have to disagree with the "never be in remission" and that there is no such thing unless you have the surgery.
I have met a lot of people who did not have the surgery and have been off all meds for years, so they are, by definition, in remission. I hope to become one of them, even for just a couple of years.
Yep there is a 75% chance that your diabetes will be cured. Sucks for 25% though.
It is true if you don't do what the tell you to do you will gain your weight back or worse you can kill yourself. It is not an easy decision and shouldn't be taken by someone that wants just a quickfix.
I usually eat a late dinner - around 7pm so not eating anything isn't hard to do, but I do go for a walk around 8pm. Not sure if it plays a role or not. All I know is if I eat something late in the evening, my FBS will be over 100 guaranteed! Let me know how it goes.
That is why when people are very low they need to wake upand check it through the night.
I suppose it depends on whatyour readings are and how high or low they go if you should eat a snack or not, were all different so just be careful. I love the retrograde potatoe notgoing for the ww tortilla tonight.
The word remission is never used unless you have the GBS. Its called 'under control'. I understand the 25% who's diabetes doesnt go into remission after GBS are those who have had it for years and years. We had one like that on Dealing - had diabetes for 25 years and it didnt go away with the surgery.
And whatever word works for not having to take meds is ok by me remission or control. The point is to get off the meds if you can. I stayed off for 8 years till I couldn't walk good. Yea everyone!!!!!!!Yea for retrograde potatoes thanks to Hope!!! Boiled, baked who cares...they taste wonderful!!!!
As a diabetic, I would NEVER want to go back to eating what I want, when I want because that is what got me where i am in the first place! I just want off the pills. Like I said, I am happy with exercising and the low carb diet. I feel better then I have in years. I actually look forward to my walks everyday. As long as I have the ability to exercise daily, I don't want to be on meds. Our bodies CAN build up resistance to medication and since I am only 38, I don't want to see that happen before I am even 60. One day I will need it when I can not move around like I can now and I want it to work when the time comes! No meds, that is all I want - oh and to drop the rest of the weight! =)
Sunn, I am so happy the potatoes worked for you too! I still only eat potatoes once or twice a week, but there are so many things you can do with them. I still have to try making the steak fries. I was in the middle of doing that but the hubby wanted to take us out to dinner. Who am i to argue with that?! In order to make the fries, you have to dry out the potatoes for as long as possible after retrograding, so that they are able to become crispy in the oven.
