Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Outline what is expected of him while he is living with you (so there's no confusion) and let him know that you are willing to help him, but he needs to be respectful of you as well.
Good luck!
See he is trying to save up to get out on his own, which I understand but its putting tons of stress on me money wise. How do you think I could come about asking for like money towards the light bill or food like how could i work that in?
We agreed what would be community expenses (like gas, water and power) and what would be personal expenses (like food above and beyond shared food).
We agreed what would be shared chores (like basic cleaning) and what would be personal chores (like doing your own laundry).
If it sounds like getting all legal and drawing up a contract, well, it basically is! But it works because everybody has a chance to discuss what they think is fair.
If he does not have money to spare, then you can 'trade' things. He may be asked to do the dishes more often because he can't afford to compensate you all for the additional water and power he uses.
You could even ask him for future considerations, such as "stay in school, and then pay us $50 per month each for a year after you graduate school. (High school? Trade school? Junior college?)
It is also important to discuss living arrangements; like when noise stops so people can sleep, how clean the place needs to be, how much time in the bathroom, etc.
Hugs, and I hope it works out OK.
ps, we were all guys, so our standards of clean were pretty lax, and that was not a big issue with us.
What it sounds like you have done is SUBLEASE to the cousin. Assuming that does not violate the original agreement, it also sounds like you had SUBLET without a WRITTEN agreement between the original renters (you and/or your boyfriend) and the cousin. If you have no written agreement with the cousin, there is no definition for how much rent the cousin will pay, when it is due, and for how long the sublease is good for.
This CAN turn into a legal nightmare. You may THINK you can tell the cousin to just leave if you must .. which CAN open you up to a CIVIL suit .. because by allowing him to move in, and the fact you have collected rent from him already, you have established a 'landlord/tenant' relationship. That relationship has laws in most states that BOTH PARTIES must abide by .. such as EVICTION LAWS .. whether there is a written agreement or not.
Due to the young age of all parties, .. it PROBABLY would not occur to the cousin to take you to court if you ask him to leave .. BUT HE COULD. I think it is great you wanted to 'be kind' to the cousin and allow him to move in .. it is just that you have not considered the legality and liability of doing such a thing.
Personally, I think it best you try to get him to move out .. as elegantly as possible .. yet as soon as possible.
Your are also right that he needs to see this is life not just a break from it.
the pepperman,
You got me thinking that if he doesnt have the money to spare maybe he could take on extra cleaning or something else. I truly also feel that from hearing everyone we need to write out some rules or something and have everyone agree with them. I think the real issue is that we dont have anything like that at this moment.
thank you for the adivce. I think seeing the bills for him will deff. show him we need help.
wandering vet,
everything is legal we actually just moved into a different place because our lease was up and on our new lease we put him on there that he is staying with us. But my boyfriend chris and I are the primary income and lease holders. His cousin is just on there so the landlord knows he is there and we cant get in trouble for it. You serioulsy made me think legally though. I am deff going to draw up a contract and do some research on it. Cuz something has to be done incause things go wrong with us and he decides to turn around and take us to court. Thank you so much for getting me to think that way!!!
Lianna
thank you for the support :)
I also agree that it would be best if he got out as soon as he can because I am sooo stressed and its not right
