When you chose your friends make sure you don't try to see them as someone they aren't and can't be. Really look at what they say and do then decide what level of friendship your going to give them.
Some people don't have what it takes to be friends, they are to self centered and wrapped up in their own drama to care about you and it's usualy pretty clear who these people are if you just listen to what they say for even a short time.
Then there are people who might really care but their basic life is so fucked up they can't give you what you need, your decision then is do you care enough about them to be a friend even when you know you'r not likely to get much back in return?
They say most of us are lucky if we find one or two REAL friends during the course of our lives. Studies have shown that having more then those two real friends does not improve the quality of your life in any measurable way but not having them does influence your mental and phsycial health. So go for quality and leave the quantity for those who are not up to the levels of commitment being a friend takes.
