Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Hi everyone, I need to ask for opinions and how other people deal with unhappy associations. I have been in acquaintance with a woman from church for 11 years. She likes to be a leader, and restarted a prayer group. I have been in the group and stopped a few times. Lately, with more stress we are all dealing with, she has been harder for me to be with. I don't feel we are really equals because she is a leader. I have started to limit association with her. Not because she likes to be a leader, but because she has made comments in past that have offended or rubbed me the wrong way. Tomorrow I will see her, but for a mutually helpful activity. I can probably deal with that, however, she is giving or her way of being a Christian is helping out. She knows I don't drive and offered to take me to my relatives house to leave off some supplies. This sounds all very nice, but I don't like it because she made comments in past how she gets invited a lot of places and her dghtr gets invited a lot of places. By the tone of voice and the attitude, she came across like she was trying to put herself up as so popular. I just don't feel that comfortable taking anything from her with her attitude. Another time she came across to me to try to self praise and put herself up that she enjoys herself a lot. This comment came out of nowhere. Unfortunately, I told her I get depressed at one time and I think this might have something to do with it. She came across as I'm a big success because I enjoy myself. So I don't tell her anything personal anymore. Other people have confided to me they don't like some of her words and actions either. My therapist said just go with her and don't think about too much and enjoy it. It just I don't feel comfortable letting her give a ride to my relatives. Than she can say after all I did for Bluebird, etc.

Also, some people say things trying to be uplifting, not understanding that they are coming off as negative. When you're in a depressed mood sometimes its easier to take things more "off" than as it's meant. Saying, "she enjoys herself a lot" may be her way of saying, "she keeps sad/depressed thoughts at bay by finding the joy in her self, keeping her spirit full of joy and gladness" there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with people being honest about their feelings about themselves whether they be "joyful feelings" or "sad feelings", sometimes it's hard to remember that.
If you don't care for her, then just decline the offer, politely. You don't have to force yourself to be around people you don't want to....that's about as far opposite as the point of church as you can get.
I hear your concerns and your the sadness in your heart to get along with the young lady. I am glad that you are a Christian because I think at least that shows you have the ability to love beyond that hurt and sadness. I think the only things you can do at this point are pray for her to hear you and that God works on you and her so that you all can work better together to further the kingdom. Provide grace and breathe throughout the irritation, we are humans. This is why we need reminders and accountability partners to help us when we are humanly week. Count on the Lord to amend the fences. He has a great plan for you and her and thank you for your service. Praying for your peace in your heart and your ability to move forward and working together with the gifts God gave you.
