I go to a depression support group 2 times a week sometimes 3 times when I can do it ,,,today ,,it was pretty crowded ,,more than I have seen in the recent past ...I think there was about 11 people in the group and it was a bit much,, everyone needed to get their story out and there was only an hour,,,still ,,, it was good and pretty helpful..

The common denominator in the group that I have found and the issue that seems to connect most of them was the fact that all or most had been recently made unemployed, fired, or whatever you want to call it ,,,
Some where brought to tears,, others seemed lost ,,a few angry and didn't know where to put those feelings....

Normally people who are currently employed even though they may hate there job are bound to their employment and it becomes their anchor to reality...they may bitch and complain but that is what many people do in their jobs ,,,but they do get on with it...

When you are cut loose..and suddenly find yourself displaced ,,it suddenly becomes something of a " GAME CHANGER ", and because of this a person who would have some lifes challenges finds themselves and their mood elevated to depression and hopelessness...and because of the condition they find themselves in ...do not see a way through this ..IT IS A TERRIBLE SITUATION FOR ANYONE TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH...

I agree...I know that after college, my unemployment made things worse. And I could see unemployment being someones trigger to depression. It makes you feel like a reject, which sucks because most of us when we are depressed already feel like one.

I think employement as well as finiancial reward offers so much more, a place to meet people and chat over breaks, a sense of identity and accomplishment and it kills time and we are often to distracted to think about other problems in our life, we just plod along.
When employment goes often there is a void, there is no where regular to go, no people to meet up and chat with and often there is nowhere to practice our skills or trade, as well as the financial issues, i think its fair to say people often feel lost and some replace the boredom with drink or drugs..

I had to close my family's 84 yr. old business in 2009. I was able to start a new job for a major retail chain after only 6 weeks of unemployment but almost immediately began suffering from anxiety and panic attacks. After 10 months of this, I couldn't take anymore and so took a leave of absence, went on disability and started treatment (antidepressants and therapy) for depression and anxiety. So much of my identity was wrapped up in my business. I feel like such a failure that the business failed under my watch after three generations of success. I can't get past the guilt I feel, almost as if a loved one has passed away and it's my fault. I've stopped taking the meds and going to therapy as I've lost my insurance, am selling my home for much less than it's worth in order to avoid foreclosure and am moving to a different area with a much lower cost-of-living (rent, at least). I'm hoping a fresh start in a new location can help me get past my major issues. I have an amazing wife that's supported me through this and 3 beautiful children who inspire me everyday to get better. I wish I felt strong enough to justify their faith and belief in me.

I hear you! I am unemployed,,and it depresses me even more than I already am.
I feel useless, hopeless,rejected, and lost.

been giving it some serious thought and unemployment in the main costs society far more than unemployment checks ,,if you add in potential hospitalizations, possible criminal activities, potential medical issues, the wide range of social costs,,,how much would it cost to administer government temporary jobs against this ,,,if nothing else it would create a healthy competition in the workforce for these people within the pvt sector,,,,IF THE PRIVATE SECTOR IS SO INTRANSIGANT ABOUT CREATING JOBS ..LET THE GOVERNMENT PICK UP THE SLACK.. as they say " NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL THINGS CHANGE "

i feel very disconnedcted and lost right now while i job hunt. i have a job off the books to help me pay the bills. but it is hard finding a job. i feel like everyone around me has one, i feel inadequate. all i want to do is do a good job and support my family as i am a single parent. it really sucks. i take anti-depressants and would up in the hospital over this. you really hit the nail on the head mycrftt.

the jobs are scarce. it seems. i am just surviveing and it has affected my spirit.
