I have had thoughts of suicide since I was 14. In the past year I have thought about it considerably less than usual though and normally don't really think about it all, but I have seriously considered it in the past. I have a history of it... Recently there was a major conflict that has lead me to consider actually telling my parents that i have had this problem in the past (not because I'm scared I'll do it, I have other reasons). They have no idea I have ever had thoughts of suicide. They know I have problems with depression from time to time but don't know just how bad it gets. I'm more afraid of telling my dad than I am of telling my mom (partly because my dad doesn't really seem to have such a high opinion of me and is likely to freak out more).
I'm just curious, has anyone else ever told their parents? How have they reacted? Does anyone have any advice? Is this really such a good idea?

Sadly i was let down big time and the whole situation deeply affected me so much, it has had a terrible impact on my life.
I dont go to them anymore, even if my life depended on it.
Having said that, dont let it stop you telling yours, we all have different parents thank god, and each parent deserves a chance.
Though, in the past year or so I've hardly thought of suicide at all and have been considerably less depressed. In the past few months I've actually been doing ok.
Was seeing a therapist and a girl who where more supportive at the time might not of been here otherwise.
Surprisingly have nothing to do with my parents or family anymore.
in addition to your parents, do you have anyone else you can confide in? Counselor, clergy, Great Aunt?
