I don't think people that don't have mental illness realize how damaging social media can be. It really doesn't make me feel good when I see others living a potrayal of such a "perfect life" with all the friends and parties, that I had to eventually take a break from social media. Also, all the strong posts and opinions is just a debbie downer and starts out my day in a depressive mood. I'm not sure how anyone else with depression is feeling about social media, but now I'm having more private accounts and keeping more to myself. Social media seems to be becoming something that it was never intended to be.

For various reasons, I had to unfollow a lot of people. Their posts annoyed the crap out of me. I talked to my therapist about it and she told me that they have the right to post whatever they want.

I agree 100 percent. Social media has the potential to be very damaging. I have Facebook because it has a support group for a rare physical illness that I have, but I keep my profile private and don't bother with much of what it is used for.

I don't use Instagram, Tiktok or Twitter because I know spending too much time on social media would just be too much for me emotionally

Yes social media can be depressing for people as many only put up their party times and happy times , which is fine but you have to take it for what it’s worth.
I only use some social media because I follow a couple groups like my town, and a dog group one of my labs came from.
It is certainly dangerous for those who cannot see through what people use it for.
As many issues I have, and I have many, I do realize not to take to heart what people are posting on social media.

@GreenEyes727, I had to unfriend a lot of people as well. With my facebook, I wanted more friends so I kept adding extended family from other states. I wanted to get to know them well, but not THAT well ahahaha :) They posted all kinds of weird things, like, gross! So I unfollowed them and now I only use messenger to talk to my mormon friend because she isn't allowed to have a phone so we connect online and she's so nice, we've been friends for years and she also has anxiety. But anyway, I only stick to messenger app now.

@sonnycamehome, Yeah facebook luckily has great support groups for some, housing and apartments to look at, messenger app, but I also keep it minimal. I don't mind instagram but I look at it once in a blue moon. I add pictures to my profile for me instead of for others, it took years to be able to just enjoy social media for my pictures because I like them instead of trying to have all these random people online like my pictures. I don't want anyone trying to track me. Sometimes I get weird messages on Instagram of men from foreign countries wanting me to move there and marry them. Yikes!

@Marian2, That's really good advice and I really appreciate your input! It can be dangerous at times so I keep my account private, but I do like to keep up with my true friends on there and see how they're doing, but only the friends that are realistic and understanding of mental health. Almost all my friends have mental illness because it's getting worse by the day, but I'm glad more people understand so it's kind of bittersweet.

To be honest, I don't like and rarely use social media. I have a Facebook account, but I pretty much only use it to have contact with a few people such as my son (through his father). I am in a few groups through there, but I don't really post much. To be honest, I post more on here because I find there are better and more helpful comments.
I also think you are correct when you say social media is becoming something it was not intended to be.

    Actually, our Governor called a State of Emergency.  I pray that my electric doesn't go out.  I had already planned to stay home all weekend to recuperate from a cold and do online training for my job.  That will take many hours.  I am worried for the outside kitties.  I hope your weekend goes better for you.
