Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I don't think it's fair when people use the threat of suicide to receive attention. I consider it a form of emotional manipulation. Suicide is a real issue when it comes to depression and it shouldn't be taken lightly. A hockey player talked about being suicidal not too long ago and then claimed he was joking which just disgusted me because it is a serious issue that sometimes people have a hard time taking seriously especially on the internet because of people like him. I battle with thoughts of slashing my wrists or hanging myself so I know what it's like to be in the blackest hole of despair. I am doing all I can to get help so I can live, but I often find people don't understand because of the minority of attention seekers out there.

Many of you know Mr K told me to "shut your mouth" in March 2025 when we took a road trip to Alpena Michigan. Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway. And when we first started dating in 2024 he let me know, although he is an engineer by degree, he has an extremely low EQ. Overall, he is ok (not off the charts nice like other guys in...

But unfortunately there are those who do fake it. I know of a member that has been banned for using suicide to scam people for money. I think it's a shame because it hurts the majority that just need a voice of encouragement.
like, how would that conversation go?
hey, if you don't send me some money I will commit suicide?
just tryin to figure that one out..sorry
Talk of suicide will trigger me all the time, but we have to deal with our triggers somehow or steer clear of the crisis board and try to "predict" what posts on the general discussion board are about it from their titles. I think that if we hint for a moment that those in deep crisis are "using" the threat of suicide for attention here it's a dangerous assumption to make. Kind words cost us nothing, and if we choose to ignore the thread that's fine too.
Suyb, I think you might have taken this post the wrong way? Not criticising, just trying to make you feel a little bit better about it. My son's girlfriend threatened suicide if he split up with her, which affected him deeply and kept him in a bad relationship for weeks. When he finally ended it she sent him numerous messages threatening to kill herself, and he felt terrible, but a week later she has a new beau! I think that's what Blue was saying here.
