Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I'm a third year biochemistry major who has been preparing myself for admission to medical school for some time now. Throughout my undergrad years, I've struggled with keeping above a B+ average due to complications with my health and disabilities, severe mental illnesses that I still deal with, and the recent loss of my father. I try my very best.
Today during my 8am lecture, I overheard one of my classmates announcing his acceptance into an early decision program for a medical school. While I'm very happy for him since he's a great person who works hard and absolutely deserves this accomplishment, I can't help but feel a little envious of him. Now, I'm not the jealous type. I don't believe in wishing for others misfortune because they have something I don't. I don't do bitterness and I will never wish ill for someone else. Nevertheless, part of me still wishes I was him. I think it stems from a self-esteem issue which is something I always knew I had. The way I interpret my feelings is that in this scenario, I envy this guy because he possesses characteristics and accomplishments that I've always wanted such as confidence, charisma, intelligence, humbleness, etc. The irony of it is that if I were to ask other people to describe me, they would use the same terms. I think when it all comes down to it, I need to stop comparing myself to others since my journey and struggles are obviously different from his. This is a hard pill to swallow because it's a extremely bad habit of mine. I hope that one day I'll reach a point where I'm comfortable with who I am.

The best antidepressant is when my wishes are honored. An example, the faucet in my apartment was running although the knobs were turned shut all the way, and one of the pulling strings on my ceiling fan came off. As soon as I notified my maintenance man, he was quick to reply with the work order. RAPID response... he's getting my services around my apartment done. I appreciate my landlord and...

Hello,so I'm currently in a weird relationship with my long distance ex who I've never met in person and it's taking a toll on me. I've lost 15 pounds and lost my appetite, but I'm really attached to him. We've had a lot of problems and I think that has caused me to gain severe anxiety. I don't know if I should wait until it gets better or what. Everytime I've blocked him, it has tend to make me...

Park the envy for there will always be people more academic or better looking than you and there will be people less academic/ less good looking than you.
Jealousy is such an icky feeling but although it feels icky, use that energy towards what you really want! i mean try to let it motivate you instead of 'getting of it'... btw I hate that, when people use to say just get over it, No. I dont invalidate how I feel anymore. I use to let me down so much but im doing more self care these days
Know, You have every right to feel the way you do, take your time in whatever you need. Keep doing your work, keep moving forward and prove it wrong. Youve gotten so far despite all your challenges and you never gave up! I can see that as you are still in school. Its okay to be jealous sometimes, make peace with where you are and know your not going to be there forever... just keep moving forward =) thats my best advice! if it also helps, Im struggling with this too (health problems as well) so know your not alone. Hugs!
>>I need to stop comparing myself to others
That would be an excellent idea.
You know those of us with Chronic Medical issues and Mental Illness generally aren't expected to go very far in the world....it's kind of a statistic.
I'll tell you as someone with 8 Chronic/Genetic Medical Illnesses and BiPolar Disorder who's had 31 surgeries in the last 20 years, and made it through Texas A&M University with a Ph.d in Psychology, a Bachelors in Accounting and an Associates in Computer Science (I like to learn different things, I'm quirky that way ;0) ) I've had a 25 year marriage, that I chose to end, and I've raised 2 remarkable sons, my 29 yr old is a Firefighter/EMT and my 20 year old is 2nd year at NC State studying to be a Fish and Wildlife Officer.
I've had a Professional Career for the last 25 years and am now Semi-Retired at the ripe old age of 50, which gives lots of time to Volunteer in the Mental Health Field.
The course you choose to take to get to what you want to do, is not about how someone else is doing it. You are writing your Journey one incredible step at a time, and you are Succeeding. So don't worry about what others that probably don't have the hurdles and stumbling blocks in their path that you do, are doing. Focus on your path and your Journey, focus on what an awesome job you are doing.
Because you are doing an Awesome Job and you should be incredibly Proud of yourself.
Take care,
Kat
you sound awesome to me!
