Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I had thought I could just save this for a journal entry tonight...but...I can't. I just can't. Don't really know where this fits, so I'm putting this both here and on the paranoia board (the latter is probably where this belongs so don't be afraid to tell me that if this is out of place):
Some days, I question why it is that I don't want to leave the house unless I absolutely have to (examples: doctor appointments, runs because they're around a tot lot a block from home, to my current part-time job). This comes up because I'm in the process of looking for a better job than I have now, but I pretty much do everything wrong. I treat networking events like they're dynamite sticks and delete the invites as they come in.
Then I get reminders like this morning about why I am the way that I am. Some of you have probably heard about the shootings in Orlando at a nightclub (let's take the fact that it's a gay nightclub out of the picture because I don't think that's relevant) early this morning (late last night?). I really can't bear to go into details about it...all I really want to tell is that it has killed at least 50 and set another 53 or so to the hospital. I think the death toll is expected to rise.
That's why I don't like going out. I know that it technically hurts me not to, but I don't own body armor...and my parents have gone on record saying that if they catch me ordering it I'll be sent straight to the Happy Valley Nut House (you know what I mean). I know I shouldn't be saying this, but since I believe people are morally only out to hurt others...
...I feel like I need body armor AND a gun just to get through most days. I feel that it's not safe out there anymore. Actually that needs to be rephrased a little: It's been virtually forever since I've felt totally safe, courtesy of a smoke bombing I had to endure in high school, but the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 took that to another level by telling me that locations I thought I could visit without a second thought are not failsafe.
I keep telling myself that I have to be better than this, but I just can't do it. Nobody can be trusted IRL anymore...that's the reality I feel.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmonĀ

I am so very angry over what happened, but I have no real idea for what we need to do. I do think that our outgoing President is too reluctant to call it what it is.
There's absolutely no point even bothering about it. Do you want to end up like Howard Hughes, starving to death for fear of germs?
You just can't win against fate, so you may as well not even waste time thinking about it. Just get out there and live your life.
As to thinking people have evil intent. Not really. Not mostly. Nobody really does. Just those random psychos make up for all the others. Most people you will meet in your life are kind-hearted, good natured, giving and loving. That's most people.
There is one candidate who wants that dialog. But he scares me.
there are about 5to6billion people on Earth and to say they all only want to harm others is way out of line...I have not met anyone who fit that description in my 58yrs so far other than a guy who kidnapped a male kid and held him as his sexual hostage for about 2 1/2 yrs but God did what he needed and he got caught and is in jail now for life plus....with no parole....
yes this thing going on within the Islamic religion is horrendous and is so not honoring their former leaders....but where do we go from here? I am like Pepperman I will not cower and I meet muslims all the time in my business....I teach driving....I do not suspect them or fear them....I am just happy they pay cash!
What is upsetting is that this can happen anywhere at anytime. We all need to be vigilant and try to keep safe. But I agree with other posts that declare that we must try to lead our normal lives.
Is outlawing assault rifles going to help? Bill O'Reilly says we must declare formally---a War on the terrorists. a War on Isis to give the FBI and others more authority to detain possible suspects. I pray our leaders can curb the evil of ISIS and other terror groups.
People use all sorts of excuses and reasons for justifying their acts.
However, if it's true that Omar was a regular at that bar trying to pick up men then it looks more like someone more disturbed by their sexuality than radicalism.
Personally, as an outsider listening to the catalogue of mass shootings in the US and the many and various motivations the common theme is the ease of access to guns.
Other countries don't have the same laws which is why you are hearing very little news about mass killings in other first world countries other than terrorism.
Lots of people get frustrated and angry all over the world - but if you don't have access to an assault rifle that anger usually fades before you can do anything.
But I know it won't change.

US is sort of in the high middle ground with a rate of under 3.5 gun related homicides per 100,000 people. Most of Central and South America are higher, and all of Europe is lower.
The problem with a lot of gun control methods is that it is a feel good thing for people who don't understand the true gun issue. The oft quoted saying is that "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". From my perspective, gun laws need to focus on the people who abuse guns, and then the laws have to have teeth in them (sorry, a US saying), and the laws have to be used.
In this case, the Orlando killings, the shooter had all the credentials necessary to purchase guns. More laws are not likely to have had an impact had they been in place.
In this case, there were red flags (another US saying) that were there, but it seems they were either ignored, or the system had flaws that prevented officials from acting on them.
I think that the real answer is to win the hearts and souls of people, and convince them that violence is not the way to deal with people who have different ideas about how to live their lives.
And that is going to be a multi generational thing. Just look how long it took "us Christians" to stop killing people for suggesting that the Sun is the center of the universe instead of the Earth being the center of the universe. (And ironically neither is the center of the universe!)
