Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Hello,
I just needed to get some things off of my chest. I have really been having serious health problems lately. Three weeks ago, I had 2.5 of my four hyperthyroid glands removed because I have (or had, now) a condition called hyperparathyroidism. This was causing a lot of problematic symptoms and it's a condition where if it's left long enough it can destroy your kidneys and cause heart problems as well. Surgery is the cure for this. So, I did the surgery, but the recovery has been terrible. I've been totally exhausted, sleep excessively, and am dizzy and disoriented. When these enlarged glands are removed, calcium levels drop and it takes a long time to go back to normal and balanced.
Anyway, I woke up this morning, stood up from bed and promptly collapsed. My legs were incredibly stiff (a side effect of the fluctuating calcium) I felt like I was standing on a boat and the room was spinning, so nauseated, I thought I was going to vomit, and then I felt like I got hit on the head with a 2 by 4. I crashed and fell right over and hit my head on the dresser. I was on the floor in a lump. Really scary. I was so dizzy and it was so hard to walk. It's been terrible trying to work these past few weeks.
After I ate some breakfast, I felt better, and went for a long walk with my friend. I should not have driven my car. I did not tell her what happened. It was nice. I called my Dr's office on call and explained what happened. I had just been to the surgeon's office yesterday for the post op. He removed my bandage, said the incision looked good, and that I could resume a normal life. I explained to him that I hadn't been feeling like myself and was unusually exhausted. He didn't seem concerned. I won't be able to see a specialist for the follow up and blood work to monitor calcium for a couple of months yet.
The dr. on call told me go to the emergency room. There they gave me fluids on an IV and tested me for Covid. I tested negative for covid. They ran an EKG, they did not do blood work, and did a chest X-Ray. Everything looked fine to them, the doc said. He said I was probably dehydrated, maybe had a minor virus, or "stood up too fast." He also said it can be age. Yeah...um...thanks. They want me to follow up with a cardiologist. Real exciting. Not wanting to do this, but I will follow the instructions...ok. I tried to defy Dr.'s orders when they diagnosed me with this thyroid prob. because I just wanted to deny and didn't want to deal. Now a cardiac problem too? Come on! Maybe not. Maybe this is protocol.
I'm so tired of this! I was told that "this wasn't major surgery," and that "I would recover in a week." Bull****.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...
