my father suffered a stroke last July and I just don't know how to cope with it. He lives 5 hours away from me, but luckily I have a brother who has been there to help. I feel so helpless because there is nothing I can do but pray. He is 88 years old and also has diabetes and is having trouble fighting off infections, and sleeps most of the time. When I call him on the phone he tries to talk, but it's mostly jumbled except a few words. I want to cry and feel like I'm losing it everyday because I can't stand that he is suffering so much. He was a very active person all his life and now he just sleeps and is so weak.
The sad thing is that when we were the child each day we got a little bigger, a little smarter, a little more mature. Our parents are taking that path in reverse. (OK, there were times when we took one step forward and 2 steps back, but the general idea is there.)
Most marriage vows talk about "for better for worse, in sickness and in health, ...". All we can do is love them and be there for them. They gave us the best years of their lives, now we need to give them the best we can as they give us the lesser years of their lives.

I know the feeling. My mom passed away last year from a stroke. I was only a few minutes from her where she was at the hospital and then the nursing home. I spent hours with her everyday after work, but I still felt so helpless, regardless.
