my father suffered a stroke last July and I just don't know how to cope with it. He lives 5 hours away from me, but luckily I have a brother who has been there to help. I feel so helpless because there is nothing I can do but pray. He is 88 years old and also has diabetes and is having trouble fighting off infections, and sleeps most of the time. When I call him on the phone he tries to talk, but it's mostly jumbled except a few words. I want to cry and feel like I'm losing it everyday because I can't stand that he is suffering so much. He was a very active person all his life and now he just sleeps and is so weak.

I'm sorry about your dad. My own father had multiple strokes, and I live six hours away. It can be so hard. My father died in 1999 at age 76 after having several strokes over a five year period. Sometimes all that we can do is pray and to try and enjoy being together, even when it's on the phone and hard to communicate. I think that it is wonderful that you can talk on the phone, even though you can only understand a few words. It's being together, sharing love under less than ideal circumstances that count. It meant alot to me to spend time with my dad on the phone, even if he was confused sometimes (he dealt with dementia) because he always understood when I told him I loved him. What a gift. I'll be thinking of and praying for you both, and your brother.
