Sounds like it might be your brakes. Does it continue while driving or just stopping?

grinding can indicate break problems. I know it's hard if money is tight but your safty is important too. I don[t know much about cars, but I think you can go to pep boys and they will look at it for free.

Common rip off area for some mechanics! Usually they will tell you that you need shoes, pads, rotors, whatever. If you have somebody that can change them for you, it will cost a heck of a lot less and probably end up changing the pads!

Answer these questions:
Automatic or manual transmission?
Does it do it just when you press the brakes.
Look under your cart and see if anything looks like it is dragging or hanging down low.
If we figure it out, you can then get the best price by being able to tell the mechanic what the problem is and how much it will cost. Let me know. - John

If it's a hollow noise, it might be your spindle, which is what your brakes are attatched to. did you let your brakes go bad for a long time? (scraping sound)

Wheel bearing? If you have had your brakes done in the last 20,000 or so, they are not all that expensive. Go to a reputable shop and ask questions.

If you need to replace more than your brakes, you can get remanufactured parts for a lot less. Don't get rebuilt parts, though. Remanufactured.

I am so glad I have an ex who is car friendly. It sounds like your brake pads need to be replaced if you dont get it done soon then it could wear down to far to the drum or rotars then thats really expensive to replace.

took it to a mechanic and they said rear rotors, pads, maybe front too. Friend said they were honest. Hoping this isn't too expensive? Mad b/c I took it to a chain mechanic nearby recent winter and they supposedly did a tune up. How often do I have to change the brake pads? I wonder if they did something to them since they specialize in brakes. Maybe I'm being too suspicious?

Could be your wheel bearings and they are expensive at least out here in the West they are. It shouldn't cost anything to have someone look at the car for you. Go to like a tire store that does tires, brakes, wheels etc. Good Luck. Hey it also could be something simple and cheap...just tryin to be optimistic here.
