Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
:(
have sent you message and will speak to you later.
at least if you change your mind, your facebook page will still be there waiting for you (sinister!!).. although i think you should stay with me on the good ship "Fuck Facebook" ;)
hmmm, i find i always second guess myself, so if something bothers me i wonder if it`s just the messy brain game.. and THEN i wonder if i`m (as i`ve been told) "just using it as an excuse"?
that REALLY bothered me as i try to maintain as regular a life as possible. i have a flat, a car, a job of 4 years but it seems like if there`s ever anything i don`t feel up to, then it`s just a "convenient" excuse.
Just gotta know that there will always be those who have poor reactions to what we might have to say. It really IS on them, not on you. Do not take it on. Speak it and let it be what it is.
"The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls."
Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902), 1890
"Where there is much desire to learn, there of necessity will be much arguing, much writing, many opinions; for opinions in good men is but knowledge in the making."
John Milton (1608 - 1674)
"What we have to do is to be forever curiously testing new opinions and courting new impressions."
Walter Pater (1839 - 1894), 1873
I have added these because, although I don't know your exact circumstances (even though you've painted a pretty clear picture of what's going on with this), I DO completely believe that the world would be damaged by the loss of a voice as clear and unmistakable as yours, in any forum.
Many hugs...
I always feel as if my issues actually discount my feelings. They belittle it to a certain extent. I am still very low but I am aware, as always, that my reactions to things aren't what they should be.
This leads me to think all this second guessing my feelings to fit in with others is actually making me discredit myself and my feelings.
If you are told something enough, you start to believe it.
(sorry)
In short, I am not a "depressive." I'm a person. A woman. A writer. A nature-lover. A being. As a side-note, I also suffer from allergies, astigmatism, and, oh, depression. Yes, sometimes the latter-most makes it impossible for me to function properly, and this is something that I share in common with many people who have similar troubles. But it is not a person, not ME. Which is why I strongly feel that I demand respect from anyone who considers seeing me through squinted eyes, in terms of my illness alone: only a fraction of a very complicated, layered, and unique individual being, just like them.
I hope you won't feel I've "picked at" your words, but I do see an inherent connection between that terminology and the very social plight that plagues us.
Another thing: I have spent a lot of time watching these people at work. In many ways, I consider the inablity to consider new truths to be a kind of neurotic malady, much worse on any scale than depression.
And if someone is using your medical condition against you as a reason to discount your argument, well then, they strike me as the kind of person who will stoop to anything...it is cheap and low.... NOT exactly the mark of a good character or someone whose opinion should matter to you.
And, since it's happened to me so many times with the same people, over and over again, I have to wonder why what I would have to say on any given subject would be so threatening to them, depressed or not. It points to a general unwilllingness to embrace thought in general, this lack of openness to new truths and different views.
Their loss, in so many, many ways.
I used to feel as they've made you feel. I no longer do, because really, I can't afford it. Their ignorance cannot hold me back, tie up my thoughts, or rent space in my head anymore. It is a hard position, but I need my energy for other things.
Hugs.....
I tend not to tell too many folks. My close friends and family know but certain members of my family don't listen and this hurts most, always the family. The ones who should be aware and be there. The friends I have got are good to me, both on here and real life and I am thankful but I am aware that I can be a chore to be with at times. Everyone has their limit.
I have had down periods but not as long as this for a good few years. I have to remember it alters perceptions, in that snide way it likes too. That is not to say that my thoughts on this matter aren't valid. I feel like this even when having a particular bright patch.
If I could erase the information from their minds, I would. Go back to them just thinking I was a little bit odd.
The coolest peeps I know are mental - depressives, nut-jubs, loons, whatever :P
I know im alittle late but its perfect timing for me, hearing such alot of understanding to exactly what has been and still is going on in my life,
wow! i feel grateful to you all
also what SkiesOnFire said in post27 was so helpful to me with my recent stopping contact with a so called friend, after 5 years of trying to get him to hear anything i said, whether deep or surface chat, and he would say that it was me being mentally ill and that it was obvious my meds werent working....over the last 2 years ive had a struggle, he seemed to like me to need him,but just could not understand that speaking about feelings, association, learning from others was part of growing and maturing. He thought feelings were a waste of time, that you should just get on with stuff, and he refused always to allow me to explain my ideas or opinionsto him if they were different to his...ofcourse there were little bits of conversing over 5 years..one thing i asked him was have you always slept so well..he said "yes apart from a few hours on a couple of nights "in his whole life(he is 63).., and knowing some of his wrong doings, well ! ......so it was on the royal wedding day i lost it ,told him what i thought of him and said ,no more contact, ...he has called me once since,a few days ago, and i said i m sorry i know you cant understand why but i cope with the way you are anymore...This thread gave me the strength to continue doing what is right...for me..........love tia
