Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Apologies, i don't know where else I might post this. I recently got into Magic The Gathering, and have been playing at my local game store frequently. Over the last couple of months, me and another player have had some less than fun games. I typically only play Commander, which is a multiplayer variant of Magic, typically played with 4 people. This other player has built decks in the past that usually do something I find not fun, be it spawn a bunch of big creatures, make it so he can't be attacked or otherwise lose the game, take infinite extra turns, and so on. So, naturally, I've come to view anything he plays as a massive threat, and aim to remove him from the game as soon as possible. This, perhaps understandably, has made him feel targeted, and seemingly personally attacked by me. In our minimal games, over the course of months, any time I get any bit of leeway over him, or he feels even the slightest inkling that I'm being unfair to his enjoyment of the game, he will quit and storm off. And today was the last straw. He, once again, played a deck that did things I felt were unfair, I stopped him from doing them, and this time, instead of just storming off, he verbally assaulted me, claiming I was personally and intentionally targeting him instead of the other players, and that I was "preventing him from playing the game". By the way, he's like, at least 45 years old. And I did what I always do when I'm assaulted like that: I shut up, shut down, and I cried. In public, in front of like, at least 20 other patrons at the store, I cried. It was so embarrassing, and honestly scary. I wish there was a way to ban him from the store. What he did was assault, in my mind. Verbal, yes, but it psychologically affected me just as if it was physical. All I'm guilty of is playing the game, and doing my best to remove a known threat, and someone known to play powerful, annoying cards if left alone in the game too long. I still want to cry, even now, hours later. One of the other players at the table tried to comfort me, and his heart was definitely in the right place, but his... advice? Pep talk? Whatever you call it, it basically boiled down to "you did target him, regardless of if you felt you had reason to. In Commander, which is multiplayer, that's generally a no-no. However, he shouldn't have reacted like that". And that just... isn't what I wanted to hear. It still isn't what I want to hear now, because it doesn't make sense to me. I had a very logical and understandable line of reasoning: I had experience with this player and previous decks he had built. I've seen cards and strategies he used in the past. So, I aimed for the threat. In my mind, and by my reasoning, I did absolutely nothing wrong. On the contrary, I think I was the smartest player at the table, aiming to remove the known threat as quickly as possible. Apparently, I'm supposed to sit there with my dick in my hand and let the other players kill me instead, to maintain "decorum" in a multiplayer environment. Fuck. That. I will kill the threat, perceived or not, as fast as I can, because if I let the threat get going, I won't have a chance to win. Why give a threat a chance to get going or recover if I can prevent it? Because it's "mean"? Because it's "unsportsmanlike"? THAT. IS. THE. GAME. And if you don't like that, you don't have to play the game. It is as simple as that, and if a 45 year old is going to be a baby when he loses, and a maniacal asshole when he loses repeatedly, he deserves to be banned from the shop. Period.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmon

Hey All...I hope that you have a lovely, peaceful beginning of your weekI have a bunch of chores that need doing but may put them off til tomorrow and just hang out with my landlord/roomie todayWhat about you?...Anything special going on?Have a great day and take good care of you!!..Xo

Not coming out on top and rather than learn from error, it's easier to attack. It's designed to break your spirit in a 'how dare you be better than me!' That's a personal problem with this guy.
People that play sports never get better playing against people they can beat. They play against others that are better so they get better. So kicking others to be sure they can remain top dog isn't surprising. It's a psychological defense mechanism.
In a strategy sense, if he is better than the others, offers the biggest threat or leaves himself open to stupid moves, of course you'll go after him. That's the game. I wonder what his reaction would be if you said something like:
'ok I'll be nice and LET you win. If it makes you feel better you can have all the victories you want but we won't truly be playing. If you want to get victories they'll be hollow because you haven't earned them by playing better.'
Or: 'damn right I target you if you make stupid moves or are a threat to my game. Want to win? Play better.'
Not sure he'd like either one, but sometimes the truth stings and is appropriate. If he acted a little different, there are ways to be more subtle and encouraging but not as he is.
He simply hates he can't win and you're better than him. It's verbal fists. One could find wisdom in not giving him the satisfaction.
I do not know anything about this game but I would think if you play someone regularly and you learn their predictable moves and you take them out then so be it, that’s called taking out the competition. If he doesn’t like it then he either needs to change his moves or not play you. No idea why in this particular commander version it is a “no-no” but that sounds like a rule that a bunch of babies made up because they can’t win without some etiquette rule. I would either find another group to play with… or Personally, I’d walk up to that guy in the store pull him aside and say exactly how you feel and that it was rude and not right how he treated you. Unless he threatened you or you feel like he could get violent, then I would talk to the store owner. Technically you could report him to the police if he threatened you. If he ever gets in your face I would call the police.
You can check and see if there are rules in the store for playing the game or conduct for being welcome to play
He was out of line I agree
Very childish
Big hug...xo
