I am very sad tonight. I carry a history of depression along with the guilt of something bad that I have done. It hurts so much and the only thing that calms the pain is drinking too much whiskey. I have a wife and two daughters, 13 and 5. I love them more than anything and tonight I think of them and want to cry like a baby. I am so sorry. . .

I am sorry to hear you are in so much mental pain. I am here to listen if you want to talk this evening. I need more details.
My best suggestion would be to let yourself have done it, and provided nobody is suffering right now as a cause of it, eg nobody's locked in the basement or in jail for a crime you committed, then you can let it go.
You can just let it go. It's okay to do so.
Guilt is usually for stuff we've done, not stuff we're doing. If we had guilt for stuff we were actually doing, we wouldn't be doing it. So I'm going to make a leap and say it's a thing you have already done.
Which means it's over. Which means that to drag it from the past into the present can only cause hurt.
You need a counsellor and to tell them the thing you've done so you can offload it. I know when I confess I usually discover the thing I did was not so bad. :)
