Are you supposed to call a repairman for the appliances? How can they work on them if they can't see what wrong, with the gas off?

Is there some sort of citizen's advice number you can ask? I'm thinking they just expect you to replace them before they pull their fingers out of their own gas holes and turn the thing back on.

I dont have appraisals on the jewelry like a stupid ass but they cost $150 an item... I havent made a police report because I keep thinking they will show up but I know where I left them... Maybe some little fairies came in and helped with cleaning and missed placed them.... yea right......

I will start checking hawk shops though... Gawd damnit...

They should do more than just "red flag" your stuff they need to tell you what you need to do to remedy the situation. ie do they need a simple repair to make them safe or to be replaced. You'd think they would have to give the reason as to why they are red flagged. I would so want a second opinion, because why it it both of them? I only lived in the US for a while and had a gas stove, when I could smell gas the guy came and check it out and actually showed me on his tester what was setting it off. It was the connection to the stove which had been done in a crappy and supposedly illegal manner. He actually fixed it and then things were A OK.

So sorry about your jewelry, any ideas as to who was in your place? I am guessing you don't have insurance either. That just really really sucks!

I am not a contractor, but I have done some gas work. WITH FRICKING PERMITS TOO!!!!! Here are some things I learned.

The best thing is to call a certified plumber who has experience working with gas lines. Short of that, this is what I did after the earthquake shut us down many years ago. Do at your own risk as this is not 100%safe.

1) Never use a match to find a gas leak. (Don't ask, but I was a lucky kid)

2) A mix of soapy water can be used to find gas leaks. You "paint" it onto gas lines and look for bubbles. That marks the spot of the leak.

3) This is the risky part. If you can get your gas turned back on (did they lock it, or just turn it off?) then make sure that all your gas appliances are turned off at the wall.

3a) If the valve handle is "perpendicular" to the line then it is off.

3b) Then turn the gas back on. Copy down the EXACT meeter reading. If you still smell gas, or if the meter moves, then you have a break in your gas line somewhere in the house. Shut the gas off immediately.

4) If the meter does not move, and if you do not smell gas, then

4a) Inspect the bendable tubes that connect the appliances to the gas line. More often than not, they are the source of the leak. You can use the soapy water and paint brush technique to find leaks.

4b) The act of turning the gas back on to the appliance will pull some gas, so the meter will move a bit. Wait and see if the meter moves. Same stuff as before. If it moves then the appliances is likely bad.

4c) Go onto the next appliance and do the same thing.



BUT FIRST CALL THE GAS COMPANY BACK AND MAKE THEM GIVE YOU MORE OPTIONS, PERHAPS SOME REFERRALS FOR QUALIFIED CONTRACTORS IN YOUR AREA!

About your jewelry, that is just a horrible feeling, hon. I had one tiny gold cross on a chain (very sentimental) disappear on me once, and I still remember how THAT felt. Hope they turn up!

The appliances are something that can be fixed. Hopefully, it's just the connections that need replacing/reattaching.

As to the jewelry - I don't know if this will help but I do identify with that sinking feeling.

When my husband was alive we traveled a lot. He bought me a gold charm from every country we went to and after he died, I had put the charms in a little velvet bag and was going to take them to a jeweler to attach to a bracelet. The velvet bag disappeared - and it killed me because of the sentimental value of those charms.

It happens but it sure does hurt.
