Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
When we are depressed or becoming depressed one of the problems is that we begin to slowly lose touch with reality. Suddenly the face in the mirror that was pretty yesterday is horrifically ugly.. suddenly that text message our best friend hasn't returned in 2 days means she must no longer want to be friends... suddenly the outdoors seem unwelcoming but the indoors seem lonely and cold....
Part of that process of losing touch with reality is our dissociating from the world, our distancing ourselves - intentionally or not - from everything and everyone around us. It makes us feel alien in our own world, outcast in our own social group, and awkward in our own skin.
It's not a nice feeling, and it is terribly difficult to overcome. Honestly, in my experience, all we can really do is just ride it out, and try to defy it as best we can. We've got to force ourselves to be actively involved in conversations and to engage with the objects and people we come across. Slowly we begin to feel a little more connected and a little more at home.
