Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Hard to deal with the religious zealots. If this friend's son is that fanatical, then perhaps he wears on his Dad via every conversation. Could be that this "friend" has to choose between you and his religiously fanatical son. I would think that this is not the case and people can create their own boundaries.
Check it out. Ask him. "Is everything okay? I haven't heard from you?" and see where that takes you.
Holidays are a busy time for many people. Try not to jump to conclusions on this one. And remember, if they feel awkward, that's their issue. (I hear ya on feeling ignored; that's painful when we get "shut out." But don't beat yourself up for asserting your opinion. We're all adults out here, supposedly. It's okay to share your perspective.)

I think maybe it could be time to trade up to a more loving brand of friends. Like the ones you meet in here. They are out there in real life, too. I have found many of them myself. No brag, just fact.
I agree that maybe you should talk to your friend. Just him. Leave the son out of it. Maybe you can get him to be straight with you.
Huggz.
You might wait a few days then contact your friend, alone without his son present, and ask again if he wants to see a movie. I wouldn't make a big deal out of him not responding to your text the other day. You could ask him about it, but don't get all wrapped up in it. There could be all sorts of reasons he didn't text back.
As for listening to his son talk about his religious beliefs, just try to tune out from any unusual ideas. That's what I do. I listen somewhat to see if a person comes up with something informative that I can use in my own life. If I find out what they're saying isn't something I can relate to, I just give non committal responses. I don't have to get involved in the conversation.
It took me a long time to learn that I don't HAVE to get involved in all conversations (and I still struggle with that a little). I try to let the words run off my back, like water off a duck's back! It does help me to visualize the words running off me, like water.
As for feeling like crap and like nobody cares and feeling really alone...I think a lot of us depressives can most definitely relate. Those feelings just go hand in hand with a lot of our depression. Realize that you are a fine person. You have good things to offer others.
