Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I hope you have a good day.
Best of luck to you all
People don't understand that you get bombarded with negative thoughts so fast and so often that you can't work through one before 10 more pop into your head. It's like doing battle before you can even get out of bed to live the rest of your day.
so MANY people still don't believe it's a disease...and yes it's our responsibility to treat our disease but we shouldn't be ashamed that we have it.
I have a lot of Christian family and friends...Huge stigma. Depression means you don't have faith in God= sin=hell. My mom has major depression and always goes off her meds because of this and then quits taking care of all her other health issues. ARGH!
Hope everyone can find their path to some long lasting relief.
Little kids certainly have their issues, melt-downs and down moments, usually when life doesn't go their way, but they "get over it", after they're distracted by something else they find fun, or after they take a nap (all negative issues are forgotten after sleep), very quickly. A lot can be learned about resilience from little kids.
I would NEVER tell someone to just snap out of it but I DO think it is possible to tell yourself you can just sort of be OK with it for a while.
I read a book about depression I got some good stuff out of.
I believe it was called Enough is Enough.
I liked the line that said, If you MUST go back to bed at least get up and brush your teeth first!
I also think giving yourself PERMISSION to feel awful helps
I know beating myself up about it just makes it last longer.
I have been guilty of minimising the affect depression has on someone in the past. "Surely you go see someone, get magic drugs and carry on, don't you?". It is easy for those not involved to not understand as society seems to tell us it is a weakness and those affected are suffering some sort of overreaction that a few drugs will sort it. I know the reality of it now.
I don't know how long I have been having "down" periods. If I think about it I possibly have been for many years. It has only become scary in the last may be 1 - 2 years. Why is easy, many catastrophic events in sequence over 4 years; wife's newly diagnosed disability, parents worsening health, natural disaster, child self harming, wife diagnosed with terminal illness, my mum dying, my father in-law dying and to top it all discovering I am gay (still in the closet).
I hide my suffering from all because I cannot add to their problems, I have to be the strong one. I hate the thought of telling anyone including (especially?) professionals. This site has been my saviour on several occasions. I get understanding, ideas and have formed strategies that help.
I hope you are aware of how much you help and I hope I can do the same.
I am a naturally grumpy person and my Hubbie is a naturally calm happy person.
But I do not believe that is ever the whole story, and I think ppl need to at least try to break free for a few minutes at a time.
Nobody is happy all the time.
