Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I have decided it is time for me to go back to talk therapy and I am very worried about it. I have two great therapists, two that were pretty bad, and several that just didn't cut it. So this time I want to find the best fit for me without more trial and error. (I can't go back to the good ones because of moves.)
I have found two but want to know what some of their descriptions mean. One is a LCSW who is solution focused and uses short term therapy. The other is a LPC who uses cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing.
In short my life is very stressful right now and my depression and anxiety are getting worse. My anxiety can be set off at any minute and I have no clue what triggers it except being overwhelmed. That is tough because just doing household chores can send me in a tailspin and it's back to bed crying and shaking. Some days it takes everything within me to fight these disorders and even be able to get through a few hours work.
Thanks for any advice!

Hi MyMeko, the lpc is a licensed professional counselor and a lcsw is a licensed clinical social worker, the titles reflect what they went to school for. Basically I think the training is pretty similar. Both types of therapy are short term types of therapy that don't go deeply (if at all) into the past. For me the most important part of therapy has always been the relationship. Have you had a chance to talk to them each on the phone? If not my advice would be to talk to each of them on the phone and ask them to explain their approaches a bit more. I'd say to go with your instincts. Good luck, glad you're getting the help.

I've ususally done best with psychologists. They have Ph.D.'s in psychology and really study the mind. They aren't in to quick fixes and seem more patient to me. Just my experience. You'll get a good idea after you see these people or talk with them on the phone. Good luck with your therapy.

I was told to only do one therapy at a time. Psychologists are great to understand feelings and work you through them, CBT deals with the effect the past has on you today and deals with those issues. I loved Psychologist but CBT is not emotional and it got me out of the house as I felt it was the aftermath of the past I needed to deal with, not the past itself. They said I had to choose one, cbt helped the most as it's moving forward

I too like psychologists, when I can find one that doesn't start telling me that her hospital doesn't believe in Fibromyalgia, or the other woman that told me I had the eyes of a witch. Maybe it's time to try out a male? and the psychiatrist that I see now every 6 months doesn't seem to care that I have suicide ideation. She just jots it down and says she will see me in 6 months. Yea, time for a male. For me, and I'm just speaking for me, because we are all different in what works. But for me, I think I need to start from the beginning and work my way up the the present.
