For the most part my past was horrible, i wasnt in a good place. Can someone make horrible mistakes and become a much better person?

Everybody makes mistakes. Most people don't have a great past. You grow as you edge on in life. You can become a better person if you choose not to let the past effect you, and if you make better choices than your last ones. So yes you can become a better person. :)

Mistakes are a way of life and it is how you deal with them that defines you. You can always become a better person and you can always be better.

Of course. You learn from your mistakes how not to do things as you go. Humans make mistakes, we're built rather un-perfectly, as long as you learn from your mistakes and don't keep repeating them, you're living life the best you can.
