Anyone experienced benefit from medication?

I am going through a rough patch right now and have been the past several months. My depression feels as if it has gotten severe; I lack energy, experience daily headaches, difficulty concentrating, guilt, hopelessness, and most disturbingly to me, have had daily suicidal ideation (at times to the point of devising plans). 


Despite having bad reactions to a few in the past, I was thinking of trying an antidepressant, mainly becuase I am feeling so hopeless right now. I have several hesitations (including wondering if they work well) but mainly, I am terrified of uncontrollable weight gain. I have anorexia nervosa (which has lately also flared up) so the weight gain is something that terrifies me.


I guess I am looking to hear others' experiences with medications for depression (or anxiety - I have that too).

I take a combination of meds for anxiety and depression. I probably wouldn’t be able to function without them.

I had taken meds in the past. It is a trial and error thing at times. The first med that they gave me made my depression worse. They boosted it with another medication and somehow we figured out the first medication was not good for me. So it is a hit or miss thing sometimes.

There are several antidepressants that claim to NOT cause any weight gain. Talk to your doctor about any questions you may have. All that you have mentioned are treatable with the right medications.

Since medication is the most used treatment, MANY have benefited from it.

I've always been concerned with weight gain as well. The medication that works best for me happens to cause weight gain though. I'm fortunate to have an excellent psychiatrist though, and she convinced me that diet and exercise DO matter when it comes to medication and we've worked closely over the past 2 years to help manage my weight on this medication. I haven't gained a single pound and I've been able to keep my disordered eating in check.

I know it seems counterintuitive, but the medication that causes weight gain also helps keep my ED thoughts from flaring up. It was a super hard decision to make, but it's been worth it.

Whatever you decide, make sure you have a doctor who works with you and that your trust. Wishing you peace <3

My medication had been amazing. . i know my first run with Prozac was horrific but my new medication (I'm not sure the name. Cilaphram?) Has been phenomenal. It doesn't affect my weight, it doesn't make me a zombie, it just helps me rationalize my thoughts clearer and i think its even helping me to get deeper longer sleep.

    It's National Doughnut Day!Which three would you like? (never mind the calories, fat, or sugar content; just go with what you would pick if none of that mattered and whatever health issues you might have that would keep you from eating one in real life can be cast aside for this exercise as well... have at it!)
