just joined this site tonight because of another fight .. I use that term loosely because it wasn't really two way, just mainly him going off. They are happening much more often lately. At first I would get so defensive, hurt, disbelief and then so angry and we'd end up fighting. Yelling bad, etc. This time I'm just watching it, like in third person... Watching him blow up, accuse, then blame me, and him tell me I'm being calm just for a show. That I'm trying to make him lose it, etc. I was asking for us not to argue. But I'm just trying to seem perfect and make him the bad guy he says. And now I'm laying here crying, because I feel like the safe place I had with my man is gone. The things he says and accuses me of are so off the wall. I know he's under a lot of work stress, he's so miserable where he is, and we've had to deal w a lot of family stress too, theres some money stress but moreso on he wishes he were doing better but in reality we are not broke, have some savings, do well and are not materialistic people, but he's hard on himself. He has admitted in the past of accusing me of the pressure and guilt, when in reality he knows i'm not and it's pressure he had created. He's admitted when he's not angry that he may be depressed. But the smallest things set him off, and then all the blame comes and I don't know who he is anymore. And it's happening more often, like a couple times a month, and the strain lasts for days. I don't feel close to him after the blow ups, I admit I avoid him the rest of the day, I'm hurt and stressed and just want calm, which makes him even more mad and hurt and he slams doors, or randomly says rude stuff, which pushes me further away..this can go own for days, I know I'm.wrong too, I just want to avoid drama and fighting but I know it makes it worse. And he gets more mad and accuses me of more stuff. It's a horrible cycle. It breaks my heart. Like bad. I'm crushed. But yeah I wonder if things will ever feel warm and safe again, or loving and comfortable. When it's, good it's soooo good. Married almost 15 years, and when things are good, it's the best I could ever imagine. He's caring and attentive, complimentary, he has such fierce loyalty. He had seemed more distant lately though the past 6 months.. But I knew the work stress is a big cause. And teenage stress causes lack of time for us. Regardless I always know he loves me. But when its bad I can't imagine living the rest of my life like this. Its lonely and horrible to hear someone you love assume all sorts of stuff about you. And just go off on all sorts of negative stuff about himself, and about how you're the cause.... It's confusing, Werent we just having an amazing date night a couple nights ago... I don't understand how there's so much negativity, so much attack.. Over carpet, or Christmas decorations... Like we are having a casual conversation and we are good, like hanging out having fun, and apparently I say something that literally pisses him off and it goes 180.... How?
Is this depression? I thought depression was more sad, lethargic, more negativity than motivation.... This anger....?? Is this a part of it for real? This is so hurtful. Its like everything he is stressed or feels he has no control over comes out at me. I love him so much and would never intentionally say anything to hurry himor make him feel used.... But he interprets so many things as personal attacks or put downs, its like he's looking for me to disapprove of him and then he lashes out.
What do I do? He says he's handling his depression with vyvance. He is not seeing anyone, mainly because when he's angry its all my fault so why would he need to go. And he also says he's seen counselors in the past...hence the add diagnosis and vyvance. So he doesn't need to go again.
If anyone read this... Thank you. I know it was long. :(

Hi All.... It's great to see all of the new people joining the site... I'm loving it!!...smileI'm not sure if people are aware that if you don't have Bipolar Disorder but have a loved one who has the disorder we do have a board for people to go to in order to share their experiences and seek friendship, support or adviseIt's the Friends and Family of Bipolar Board.... I hope you'll take a...
I am alone and I hate how I can't feel completely happy without him. He knows he has the power in our relationship because I am the only one to ever apologise (wether it is my fault or not) or to reach out to him when he shuts down because if I didn't, he would go days/weeks/ possibly months without needing to talk or anything- I'm the complete opposite, I am literally terrified of going to bed angry. I don't understand how someone who says they love you, not want to just be happy and enjoy life - with its ups and downs...
I know things aren't ever going to be perfect but as long as we have each other- that use to be enough... now it doesn't even come close.
I miss him. I miss us.... and I'm scared. After 18 years together- almost 13 married and two beautiful little girls later- I don't know how to exist without that man... I need him to be him again. I feel selfish. I can't help it.
I'm sorry I don't have any answers for u... il keep my fingers crossed though that things do get better babe and better more perminantly more importantly xxx
Hold on, ur stronger then u think.
My boyfriend puts a lot of pressure on himself too... It's gotten to the point where I feel like his standards are so high for himself and he can't see that I don't expect so much from him. I wish he'd ask or accept my help more often but someone who responded to me on another post said that people with depression sometimes have trouble recognizing when they need help.
I'm so sorry that you're going through these times of anger with him. I hope that you stay safe.
Maybe when he's having good days you guys can sit and talk, you can map out how you feel and how he feels and maybe get counseling if one-one doesn't work. Going for a "second-opinion" in regards to his old diagnosis may be helpful too or even anger management if it keeps up. You gotta figure out where your lines have to be drawn, the good times are wonderful- they help when things are hard, help you stay strong, and they are the end-goal... but you have to think of your well-being.
Quick question: How did he get the medication if he doesn't see anyone? I don't want to jump to conclusions or anything but Vyvanse signs of overdose include violent actions and panic states. So if the yelling and arguments got worse/ more unpredictable after the medication a simple dosage correction may help. (for reference: https://www.drugs.com/sfx/vyvanse-side-effects.html )
Also for those that asked.. he saw a counselor years ago that diagnosed him with ADHD. He's been on vyvance for years.. With med checks w reg ol Dr to renew script. he does not take it daily just randomly when he thinks he needs it a few times a week or more maybe. He says it helps his depressed feeling too and he's pretty stubborn that he's handling it.
I just joined this site and read all of the messages you all posted. My husband took the only step that I gave him the option of taking, which was seeking medical help through detox, counseling and now intense therapy. I am perhaps in a different boat in that my husband has been severely depressed over the years, I'd say probably 5 or more, and has had a lot of trauma in his life which lead to an additional diagnosis of PTSD and anxiety/panic attacks just over the last year. We've been together for 20 years, since we were teenagers basically, so we've grown into adulthood together.
He was self medicating with alcohol and drugs and the guilt I feel for not seeing the progression of his drug and alcohol abuse along with not realizing the severity of his depression has me feel like I let him down as his wife and best friend. I had wanted to leave him once due to a stupid mistake we made together and he attempted suicide because of it-about 3 years ago. He thinks I'm with him out of pity and is so down on himself, even tells me he's unsure if I love him. When he is in a depressive state, it's really bad no matter what I say or do to try to console him. I just try to be calm and be like a beacon of hope, but I have emotions too and holding them back hasn't been easy for me. We fought the other night and I lost it, crying, screaming and he got so escalated that I didn't know what to do so I just quieted down and said nothing else, just cried like a child.
In my research about depression, I know that as the spouse I need to remain supportive and calm, but I feel like screaming off the top of a mountain or punching a wall.
I'm seeking therapy for myself, so I guess what I'm saying is that maybe if we seek therapy to help ourselves, it will help us cope. For those of you whose spouses refuse help, I understand because men can be so difficult in admitting they need help, but seeing us do it might inspire them to do it too.
Honestly, what you describe does not sound like depression. When people are depressed they retract into themselves, become totally introverted, fatigued, they give in, don't argue because it takes too much energy to argue, they stay to themselves and avoid confrontation, depression is not so much a "stress fed" disorder. What you're describing sounds more like an "Anxiety, Stress" disorder along with some "Anger Management Issues". Has your husband ever been to a Therapist or Counselor, has he ever had any kind of mental illness diagnosis? That would be the obvious step in the right direction, to go to a Psychiatrist, get a diagnosis and figure out a treatment plan...because there are things that can be done to manage all these things. Something needs to be done, because your marriage won't survive many more years of this....the anger and the accusations will destroy it. You'll get to a point where all you have is anger towards him and sooner or later there won't be anything left to save.
I made it 24 years with my now ex-husband, we had been together since we were 16, have 2 great sons....but he had many of the same issues your husband has and it just became too much. My ex also like his beer and that didn't help at all. I've always been the University Educated, breadwinner of my family so I had to make sure I had my Mental Illness managed, had proper treatment and stayed as Stable as I could be, and I did. But the stress of dealing with my stuff and keeping me in a healthy place and dealing with his crap and meaness....it got to a point where I just got tired of dealing with it....and leaving was pretty easy, the Peace, Quiet and Lack of "Someone Snapping at me Constanly" I gained literally overnight was so worth it.
I hope you can convince your husband to see someone and get help with this problem so you guys can get your marriage back on track.
Take care,
K
