Depression Supporters Support Group
This community is dedicated to spouses, children, relatives, co-workers and others who are actively supporting someone suffering from depression or other serious mental illness. Depression can bring about intense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive, which can have a grave impact on the ability of others trying to help.
My husband has had depression, anxiety, and OCD as long as I've known him. We've been together for three years and have been married since October.
He started seeking professional help last year around mothers day. I thought we hit rock bottom at that point. It can only get better, right?
He's always used alcohol to self medicate. Recently he was diagnosed with an esophagus coated in ulcers. Too many to count. He's usually really sick. He's had bleeding ulcers twice in three weeks. He's being told if he doesn't stop drinking he'll be in a feeding tube in less than a month.
Don't get me wrong. His health is bad, but his depression is worse. He knows he has to stop drinking, but hasn't been able to do it. Today he basically told me that he's drinking to kill himself.
He keeps canceling his appointments and lying about everything. He's in therapy and sees a psychiatrist, but refuses anything else. He canceled his appointment today and he is lying about everything.
He keeps saying he'll do an IOP, when I'm really upset. However, as soon as I'm calm he doesn't think there is any reason to.
I'm at a complete lose of what to do. I feel like I'm a full time caregiver to someone who won't help. I'm terrified I'll be a widow at 25.

Hi. This is my first post. I'm here because my husband is an addict and it's having a negative impact on our marriage and my emotional and mental well being. He's an alcoholic who is also addicted to pornography and video gaming. He spends every moment that he isn't at work or sleeping drinking beer, playing his video games, and looking at porn. He's completely pushed me out of his life. We don't...

At that time I knew full well what was happening, and that I had many symptoms of physical problems, but the forces of dependence and the many fears of dealing with it made the idea of pulling out of that nosedive pretty impossible to fathom. For me, dying was a potential trajectory that seemed kind of like the natural progression.
I highly recommend that you encourage him to see a physician right away and be prepared to “put all the cards on the table”. Assure him you will be there to support him and encourage him as he heals and changes. Go to AA... a lot in the first 90 day. And handle this as a physical conditon, as well as a psychiatric condition, and a psychological condition. It is, absolutely, all 3.
I wish you all the best.
We had to go to the Emergency Room last night because he started vomitting blood and fainted. He was admitted for a multitude of things.
He told me about wanting to kill himself again, and I had to tell the nurses. I have to say, I've gotten so used to this that without your support, I probably wouldn't have said anything. I can't thank y'all enough for that. It's crazy to think that strangers care.
His suicide assessment was so high that he is on suicide watch with staff eyes on him full time. I think they plan to hold him long enough to finish detoxing as well. Also his GI doc is coming to see him today.
He looks really sad and beaten, but not angry. Maybe that is a good sign. I'm just hopeful that this is the reality check he needs to want recovery.
Hopefully these first big steps will lead down a path so he can get healthier and discover that he has a great many good qualities and that his world can be way better than he has experienced recently.
All the best!
