My husband is on Exelon and it has done wonders!A caution to you tho: NONE of these drugs slows down the progress of these diseases. The drugs just help manage symptoms. When the drugs are removed, the patient falls rapidly to where they would have been if NO DRUGS were given. Sad, but true.

My mother will just be starting excelon. I hope it helps her delusions. I pray that it does.

my mom was put on Exelon patch and I had to take her off of it because she got to the point where she couln't be control. I had her on the patch for 2 weeks and she went to worst.after I took her off she went back to the way she was before the pathc. ...rose5666

My husband has Alzheimer's Disease dimentia. He's been on the Exelon patch since November. At first I thought it was doing a good job but now I think he's getting worse. He is also starting to get angry over nothing (what seems to me to be nothing). Generally, he's very loving and affectionate. But his repetition is much worse. He doesn't remember how old he is, what day, or year it is. Not good. I'm trying to be very patient but I'm not doing a very good job of it.

My mom had to be taken off the higher does, she got too obsessive but she is back on the lower dose and one thing the doctor told me was that it is hard to measure the "good" it does because it slows down the process, it will never get better....I plan to keep her on it because if it is helping "behind the scenes" then I am thankful

My mother's neurologist prescribed Namenda and the Excelon Patch together. I wanted to be certain that she could tolerate one before putting her on both since she is prone to gastrointestinal upset with meds. She seemed to tolerate the Namenda for five weeks so I started her on the Excelon Patch. On the third day of wearing the patch, she began vomiting so I discontinued the patch immediately. After two days, the nausea and vomiting continued so I stopped all of her medications (there was no point in giving them to her since she couldn't keep anything down). After five days, I took her to the ER because I was afraid that she was dehydrating, which she was. Her blood pressure was also elevated because she hadn't been able to take her BP meds. They gave her IV fluids and pushed an anti-emetic, which helped temporarily and sent her home with a prescription for suppositories in case the nausea returned, which it has. If this continues through the day, I will be taking her back to the ER tomorrow. My suggestion to anyone who might be at risk with the side effects of any drug should carefully consider the full range of consequences should they be unfortunate to suffer them. Needless to say, we won't be giving the Excelon Patch another try since most of her other meds - for B.P., cholesterol, depression, pain, etc. - requires her to take them with food.

I have been on the Exelon Patch for approx 3 months and I really think it has helped me a lot in slowing down the progress of the Dementia/Alzheimers. At first I did not know if it did or not and I continued to slowly have things happen but for the last 3-4 weeks I seem to be at the same place that I have for that period of time. As I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, I have not seen any side effects at all that I am aware of.

Both drugs slow down the progression of the disease as far as symptoms go. And they tend to work better together than either of them alone. Generally they will start one, and then start the second one. They will not stop the disease and death will occur at about the same time it would have with no drug, but in the meantime quality of life is much better if the drugs work.

All of these drugs have side effects. And none of them work for everyone. And each case is different.

My MIL is on Namenda and the Exelon patch. The problem is this...having dementia, she forgets to take the medicine and forgets to put the patch on. So what do you do?

If she is forgetting to take her medications then she is probably ready for some services that will monitor them for her. Call her county's aging agency and find out what is available.

The options will run from a visiting nurse to make sure she takes medications and who will also monitor whether or not she is bathing (and will help her with that), to assisted living, depending on how much help she needs.

I am on the exelon patch and have been for a couple of months or so. I have had no side effects at all and at first I did not think it was helping but now I think it has slowed the progression of my dementia/alzheimers down and kept me at the same place for a few weeks, I have not noticed any new problems show up at all. I am 59 and have been dealing with this diseases for approx 3 years. I am also on effexior for depression and between the two I am having some good days most of the time.

I started this discussion several months ago and it is time for me to provide an update. My mom could not take the higher dose of exelon but we have kept her on the lower dose and namenda. She is staying "steady". She has also forgotten her meds and one thing I have done is to set my cell phone at the time of the meds and I call her to remind her to take it. If you decide to do something like that it is also a good idea to wait until the person takes the medicine before you end the phone call.

I also ran into an Exelon Patch...of course she would be "pro" exelon but she was a very sincere person and her mom was on the patch so she could relate to what we were going through. If it can be tolerated I strongly suggest the combination of namenda and exelon.
