Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.
Unable to walk due to knee pain and DVT
Hi all,
I had a back-knee injury two and a half months ago which I didn't take too seriously, basically I was just unable to squat on my left leg due to mild pain and swell. Two weeks later, I travelled for about 8 hours in the car, drove a bit, slept a bit on the back seat. Next day, my leg started hurting more, with additional calf pain and stiffness. By the evening, I was unable to walk more than 20 steps in one go. As I was in a foreign country and on my vacation, I was discourraged to visit a hospital, so I contacted my doctor back home. He was suspecting a musle stretch or a tear, and possible infection and advised me to take some antibiotics and pain-killers, and to rest, which I did for 10 days.
The situation didn't improve at all, but in fact got lot worse. My leg started swelling a lot, doubled its size and being discoloured. I was not able to walk at all. Went to the emergency, where I was hospitalized due to DVT. I was given heparin injections and transported to the hospital in my country, where I've stayed another 10 nights. I was told I was very lucky I didn't get a PE.
My condition slightly improved after being hospitalized, I was not in so much pain (when in bed) and swelling was under control, but I was still unable to walk due to pain in my knee and my calf. I went to further checks, and was advised of possible knee injury, but as I was told, nothing can be done before I get rid of thrombosis.
It's been more than a month since I was diagnosed with DVT and just about a month since released from hospital. I have my INR on about 2,4 and I take warfarin daily. I am still unable to walk due to pain in my knee. It seems like there was no improvement at all in last 10 days. Doctor told me to come back for a check in about a month time. I am just very concerned as this is going on for a while now and I just can't be in the bed for so long with my leg elevated. I wear a compression stocking and I stretch my legs couple times a day. Only moving around on crutches due to a knee pain. Has anyone gone through similar situation? Please advise, best regards to all and thanks for reading.

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
I have knee pain also because of my hip. I take Tylenol which is the only medication allowed when on Warfarin. I wear an elastic knee brace when I sleep and if the pain is really bad I also have a larger elastic knee brace that I wear when out and about.
I fell and injured my greater trochanter bursa and was in immense amount of pain for a few weeks while MRI were being scheduled, etc. finally got the cortisone shot and started to feel better. Then I started to feel worse. My knee and shin hurt, which my ortho and physical therapist wrote off as problems due to limping, crutches. Walking became increasingly painful. Then my calf swelled up so much I knew something was wrong. Went to my GP who sent to hospital. I had 4 relatively small clots in my legs and 3 in my lungs.
After being discharged from the hospital, the pain got worse. I’m unable to move my knee without pain. My hematologist said it was not due to blood clots as they were small. She said I had a knee problem.
So I got scans - all but two clots are gone (and the one behind my knee is almost gone). Also went to a orthopedic to check on my knee and X-rays and MRIs are good.
I going crazy not walking. What happened to you? How long did it take for the pain to go away??
Thank you!
First of all, being on warfarin/Coumadin does not mean that you’re unable to take pain medication aside from acetaminophen (Tylenol). It’s always best to consult with your pharmacist or doctor about what medications and/or supplements you can take along with warfarin/Coumadin.
Secondly, anticoagulants (blood thinners) do not dissolve blood clots. If your doctor(s) are holding off on treating an injury that could be associated with your blood clots, they should consider referring you to a vascular specialist like an Interventional Radiologist to see if a minimally invasive procedure to break up and remove the blood clots would be a good idea. Hoping you are doing well.
