Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.
Standing/sitting/sleeping positions to prevent PE
Hi,
I was diagnosed with a DVT in my right calf yesterday, after one in the same leg 10 years ago. The first one diminished after 2 months on Warfarin. This time I have been prescribed Eliquis.
As I am in the early stages, I believe now is the time of most danger of PE, so I want to be as safe as possible. My work involves sitting/standing for long periods. I'd like to be in the safest sitting/sleeping positions.
1. With standing for long periods (3-4 hours at a time), is this perfectly safe as long as I keep moving regularly?
2. With sitting for long periods (2 hours at a time), is it better to sit with my legs straight out in front of me, as if sitting on the floor? Or maybe to sit in a normal chair? Or sitting with knees bent but my feet raised?
I read an article saying that having the legs straight can constrict the blood flow at the knee, so it's better to have the knees bent a bit. But sitting in a normal chair obviously the feet are lower so there is a much greater gravity effect, which I would have thought is more risky.
3. With sleeping, some articles I read suggest having the legs elevated above the head, while others suggest lying flat with pillows under the knees and others say that neither of these are necessary. Which is the safest option (in terms of preventing DVT leading to PE)?
In any case, is the risk of a DVT developing into a PE very high, or actually much smaller than various articles seem to suggest?
Thanks for any advice.

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
