Recurring DVT and PE

I am a lifer for Warfarin and I don't like it because you have to watch everything you eat and any supplements.


Back in 2010, I had DVT and they decided to check for PEs right away also. For anyone who may not know, PE is Pulmonary Embolism which is blood clots in the lungs and can kill you instantly.


Well, I had a PE so I had to take the shots. They kept me on Warfarin for a year and took me off. About a month later I could hardly breathe. Like a dummy, I waited 3 days before going to walk-in. Sure enough, I had a large embolism in each lung. This time they put me in the hospital to be sure I would not die. Once the shots got my blood to a therapeutic level they discharged me, but they told me I was a lifer for warfarin.


So, that is my story. I hardly ever get to go a who;e month without an INR. It fluctuates so much.

Hi Judy, lifer here too. I was on warfarin for several years but switched to xarelto a couple of years ago. When you are on warfarin, the recommendation is testing every month, and then more frequently as needed, when your INR fluctuates. You do eventually adjust to it but yeah, it’s a little bit of a hassle. Have you asked your doc about other options for you, either different medication, a home INR monitor, etc?

Judy, Have you had a blood test for Factor 5 Leiden? Genetic clotting factor (5 times more likely to have a clot) that my GP found I have. I'm 5 weeks post a large clot in my groin after stopping Xeralto on Jan 14th for back surgery. Leg is still quite swollen, but I can walk again without pain.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
