Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.

I have a post-surgery DVT, femoral vein, ankle to pelvis from 2.5 years ago - no coumadin for 1.5 years.
My question: is massage on my DVT leg safe? I have pulled a ligament in my knee and have only been able to ease the pain to a certain extent with rest, ice, exercise and know from past experience that massage would help.
However, everything I've read says massage would be dangerous in that it could potentially break up the clot.
Any experience?

I think that's for when a clot is new. You're 2.5 years out so that's a pretty long time. Clots typically don't break off after that point, I suspect. But you may want to ask the message therapist their thoughts. Sometimes they may not want to do it, given your history, or check with your doc.

I'm 4.5 years post DVT (no coumadin), and I do get massages. I ask them to be very gentle with my right leg (I'm just paranoid, no PTS). So far all of the therapists I've been with have known what DVT is and ask appropriate questions, before and during the massage to make sure I'm comfortable. I've never had any problems.

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
