I've been taking fish oil for a couple of years now and have had no issues since being on warfarin.

I too have been taking fish oil, in rather large doses, for years and have had no problem while on Lovanox or Coumadin.

Really? I was told that fish oil, flaxseed oil and vitamin E were off limits too. But then, my PCP will tell me not to take advil, and my hematologist says not to worry about that. I'd err on the side of caution though with any supplements...

I have read that Fish Oil is a "natural blood thinner", but I suppose it matters most what dosage you are taking and whether your INR is being adjusted for it.

I plan to take a daily dose once I'm off warfarin, in the hope that it will give me a little extra thinning of the blood if I no longer have the meds to do it. Not sure that will help, but that is what I'm hoping for! :)

Fish oil was on a list of supplements to avoid because it contained vitamin K. The fish oil I take does not list vitamin K as an ingredient. My hematologist told me it was safe for me to continue taking it.

omega 3 fish oil,i believe brings down your level so be careful,i was taking it every day and my level was fine-but i began getting headaches last week so the doc said to stop taking omega 3,than i took my blood test on thurs and yesterday i was informed my level went below 2,so they changed my coumadin intake from what it was ,so be careful.

I had my DVT last April and was on coumadin 3 months. Now I take krill oil and a few other supplements research suggests support vascular health and to thin blood without all the side effects I had with the coumadin. So far so good. I was told by the doctor to take baby aspirin, but I only take it a few times a week, not every day, since I'm not convinced by the research that it's worth the risks of ulcers, etc. with long-term use. The hematologist did not find any conclusive genetic predisposition for clotting so I'm hoping I can prevent future DVTs with exercise, healthy eating and supplements (and support stockings).

If I were still on coumadin I would work closely with my doctor to make sure the INR is monitored and dosage is adjusted if taking any fish oil at the same time.

I've heard that fish oil is off limit too, but maybe your coumadin intake can be adjusted to work with the fish oil. I don't know if Vitamin K would be listed as an ingredient, since they probably don't add it--it sounds like it is already in there.

LauraLu, I'm surprised about the Advil, since I've been told multiple times (doctors, pharmacists) not to take it as it also thins the blood. I've been relying on Tylenol exclusively. Anyone else been told Advil is OK? I'm curious...

Toss - I KNOW! And when I questioned him about it he just looked at me like I was nutst to be questioning HIM. Yet he's also the doc that told me not to drink at all - so go figure. Since this original post I am done seeing my hematologist anyway.
I have NOT taken Advil, even tho he wasn't worried about it. I'm cautious of anything that can cause a bleed - more worried about that than anything else about warfarin. And because I do have my wine at night I don't even take Tylenol unless the pain can't be relieved by a hot tub.
