Is there a possibility it's not a new clot but still part of the original clot? They can often tell that from the ultra sound.

I'm sorry this happened to you. Lot of two time clotters here so you're in good company. It can take some time for your INR to stabilize. Three weeks is not long, so try to not fret about that too much.

So you were still on Xarelto when this happened?

My INR only just came into range after two whole months.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Tinybella, i was only on Xarelto for 12 weeks until October 2014, then nothing until 3 weeks ago apart from those horrendous compression stockings, which i have now been told not to wear.
Ah well...staying positive from now on.

I never thought I'd get used to the fact that I would be on Warfarin for the rest of my life but the alternative, after having had 3 clots over the past 13 years, might be that I would not survive clot #4. So, other than taking my 2 mg pill every night and wearing a medical alert bracelet when I am in the car or walking by myself, I don't feel all that much different.
Life goes on all around me. My kids are busy living their own lives with their own children. I try to remain upbeat when I am in the company of my kids and grandkids as I don't want them to have to worry about me.
I still get on my exercise bike every day and strive to do 10 miles.
Not bad at the age of 67! Even my doctor was impressed.

I am so sorry this has happened again. I am curious why no compression stalkings? I ask because I was wearing some I bought at a store prior to getting my PEs and one doctor thought they may have contributed because the were to tight just below the knee. My other doctor poo pooed that theory. Also, I was wondering why Xarelto was considered a failure if you were no longer on it?

My first DVT was 13 years ago and it was described as massive going from ankle to groin. I was told NOT to wear compression stockings.
I have never been advised to wear compression stockings after being diagnosed with dvt's. I have no idea why.
Some people swear by them.

Brooklyn, compression socks can impede blood flow in superficial veins. They use 50 MMhg compression socks after vascular surgery to help collapse varicose veins. I think your doctors knew that most of your circulation was taking place in your superficial veins because your deep veins were massively clotted up. I also had what is listed in the notes as an extensive DVT. No one ever told me about compression socks. I had to go online to find out about them. Also, even if you have not had a second clot while off Warfarin, or any known genetic clotting disorders, having scar tissue and damaged veins is a huge risk factor for recurrent thrombosis. Are they going to keep you on blood thinners for life? I have an almost completely occluded popliteal vein. My hematologist told me it would have been blood thinners for life even without genetic clotting disorders. He said that a new cot would for because of the scar tissue and limited blood flow in the area. Any how, it's good to see you're getting the proper treatment now. Don't worry about your INR. You will eventually get the correct dose of Warfarin dialed in and it will become stable over time.
