Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Support Group
Deep-vein thrombosis, also known as deep-venous thrombosis or DVT, is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. It can be caused by something preventing blood from circulating or clotting normally. Join the support group if you are coping with DVT and find others who are going through the same challenges.
Gaming and Suspected Blood Clot
Daffnae
There is a new article about someone playing a computer game for 40 hours and dying of a suspected blood clot.
I don't particularly like the blame game where people assume playing computer games is bad or that the company who creates the game is to blame. I also really don't like the people who say the kid was stupid and deserved to die (you would be amazed at how many people make comments like this).
I'm posting right now because I wanted to share that I went outside my comfort zone and used this opportunity to try to spread some awareness related to clots.
You see, I play World of Warcraft (same company as Diablo 3 in the recent story) in my spare time. My clots weren't caused by playing the game, but I was playing the game the day I went to the hospital with my PE. I could easily see the media running with a story about the game causing my issue if I had happened to die rather than getting to the hospital in time.
All I did was tell my story in the game forums (where others were ranting about the story) and provide a couple of links to stoptheclot.org and also provide some symptoms to watch out for. I figure that even if people don't take my post seriously, they have still had the warning signs of a clot and PE put in front of them and maybe someday they'll remember to take the warning signs seriously.
Thank you for listening.

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
Kudos to you for trying to educate some folks about the risks. I mean, it seems far-fetched, but it also seems to be happening more and more, which is never a good thing.
You can't really blame the company that makes the game any more than you can blame the company that makes jets for transatlantic flights or the company that makes cars for long road trips. User error, in all cases, when it results in clots.
I think it's great to spread awareness but most people may be resistant, not because they don't take you seriously but really most people just might not really think about it too hard, you know, and most people who game don't get clots, I suspect. It's like people who got skin cancer from tanning and try to spread the word. Some people, I'm afraid are still gonna tan despite someone trying to educate them. Because no one thinks anything will ever happen to them. I think that's human nature.

Playing this long is so beyond normal "pass time" behavior. I'm both sad that he died from blood clots, but also sad that this consumed his life so much, really.
