Estrogen

I've been prescribed low dose estrogen vaginal tablets (Vagifem 10 mcg) to treat a stubborn bladder infection. One of the warnings is about "serious blood clots in the legs".

Having had a DVT (ankle to pelvis, femoral vein) 3 years ago after brain surgery I am nervous about using this drug even if the amount of estrogen is very low.

Does anybody have experience with estrogen after DVT?

No, but personally, if I had a history of clots, I'd not use it. I'm so paranoid about hormones. Are you on warfarin currently?

That would freak me out too since I have a bad track record with hormones. Does your doctor know about your history?

Thanks for your comments. I spoke with the doc at the DVT clinic this afternoon and he gave me the cautious go-ahead. He said since it was a low dose topical estrogen rather than oral, it was probably okay. I will begin using it,with some trepidation because I need to get on top of the recurrent bladder infection I've had since December.

rmb, I haven't been on warfarin for almost 2.5 years and since I'm also taking Cipro for my bladder infection, that combination is apparently also a no-no.

Just thinking about using estrogen makes my DVT leg ache!

It is definitely a benefit-risk assessment. A bladder infection isn't any fun either. And I've been on Cipro myself recently ... made me really sick. So, you're dealing with a lot. Hopefully this'll be the wallop that infection needs and you can be off all this stuff sooner (rather than later).

I used to get interstitial cystitis quite a bit , and it's terrible. But antibiotics don't work for that, and often it gets missed diagnosed as just a run of the mill bladder infection or not diagnosed at all. So it's tricky treating these things. Good luck to you!

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
