I carry a quick clot sponge, and also a small first aid kit fashioned from a pill bottle - inside it has several bandaids and a few sterile gauze pads. Outside of the bottle I wrap a 3-5 foot strip of cling wrap. Lightweight, compact, and water proof. I've given first aid to other cyclists twice in the past few years, but haven't had to treat myself yet - knock on wood :-)

Oh wow! I don't ride (not even sure I remember how:-), but that is a good reminder for any sort of activity. I normally carry a small first aid kit for my kids, but I guess I have thought about carrying stuff for me...duh.

I don't ride hard core like these guys do, but I do ride my bike a lot, except for in the winter, and I always take bandaids, water and my cell phone.

Kind of a funny story...I was in the ER for dehydration once and when I was done with fluids, I they pulled the IV out of my arm and I swear, they gave me the tiniest bandaid. I said that ain't going to do it. The nurse completely ignored me,. Ok for one thing, those needles used for IVs are bigger than a needle used to draw blood, so what's with being stingy with the bandaids for a warfarin patient. Within the 60 seconds it took for me to get out of the bed, put on my long sleeve T shirt and reach for my jacked, my entire sleeve was soaked in blood. I had to then walk over to the nurse's station and ask the same nurse for a bigger band aid. You'd think after seeing all the blood, he'd want to do me a solid and help me put the bandaid on given he had two hands. Nope, the smug little a-hole handed it to me. After sitting in the ER for 6 hours, why do I have to fight you for a bandaid, you know.

I keep bandaids in the kitchen, which is wear I generally do the most damage to myself. .

Thanks for the reminder. Also, make sure you have an ID, medical insurance card (or information), emergency contact and also something that indicates you are on warfarin (if you don't have a medical alert bracelet).

Rmb, I am sure they charged you an extra $200 for that bigger bandaid, too. :-/

Wow. I've never heard of the quick clot sponges. I don't do any heavy sports, but that would be handy to throw in the car first aid kit. I do keep Band-Aids with me at all times. Of course, they're mostly cartoon characters for the kids, but it's better than nothing. I had to pull one out this morning for a paper cut that wouldn't stop bleeding.

@Dero -I'm turning into a total weight weenie. But I'm trying to get rid of the extra weight on my body first. Probably the #1 reason I signed up for this event. Now when some one offers me dessert I say heck no! I don't want to carry that with me on the trail. The gauze now in my pack is the lightest thing on my bike.

@RMB - I hate it when they ignore you! I hope you dripped blood everywhere for them to clean up. Course the tech would have to clean it up and not the nurse.

But, My camera is better then the iPhone's (more megapixels)
the light on my bike is more powerful then the one in the iPhone
and I'm NOT a phone needing person, I turn my cell on if I have to make an emergency call, that's all the use I get out of my phone.
Do I need a 64GB phone? That's what my iPod is and it full of music, need to get myself one of those "Classic" 120 GB. I have looked at getting an iPhone but I don't really need it...

Dero, do you get the Quick Clot sponges online, sports store, ??? Never heard of them til just now.

Even for those of us not on anti-coags, you can get a RoadID that notifies authorities of your name, health condition and emergency contact. You can get a bracelet or gear tag. My sis wears hers during races, and I need to get one (bad example, I know...). I've also heard it's good to tape your condition and any medications to the back of your drivers license/ID.

The heaviest thing on my bike, by far, is me - 235 pounds (~110kg). No point for me to be a weight weenie :-)

JEB - You can buy the Quick Clot Sponge online, or at REI if you have a store near you. There are also similar products on the market.

I used one of the sponges a few years back for a fellow cyclist who fell down and got a nasty cut on the back of his hand. He was bleeding all over the place! EMS arrived about 5 minutes later and removed the sponge and cling wrap. He was still bleeding at that point, so I'm still not entirely sure how well these things work. Still, I'd rather keep one with me on the bike just in case.

Since collapsing from my PE outside when no one was around (and I didn't have my cell with me then), I've been spooked enough to now carry my mobile phone all the time with me, even when just going out for a walk. I fell on the ice a couple of times this winter while outside in the dark on a walk, and this morning, slid on some black ice that aggravated an old knee injury. I always feel better having my phone with me should I fall and literally not be able to get back up.

The thing with having all your stuff in one handy gadget is that if you loose or break your one handy gadget, you have nothing. And Dero, your right, for the best pics, you need a real camera.

Oh yeah, I'm sure I was charged for that extra freakin' bandaid. Bastards!
