Can I donate blood?

On first glance you probably thought that was a pretty stupid question, but let it be known, I'm no longer taking coumadin.

Here's the situation: I was on coumadin Jan 07 - Nov 08. I am now taking 160mg aspirin daily, for the rest of my life. With my history of a dvt (which was a one off, caused by the contraceptive pill) and the fact I am now on aspirin, will I be permitted to give blood? I searched the red cross website and read through their "terms and conditions" but nowhere did they mention aspirin.

The victims of the victorian bushfires are in urgent need of blood and I'd like to help in the best possible way. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer :)

Oh, and by the way, some years ago I was fortunate to travel to a vacation spot in the Caribbean in a Malaria zone. So I had to take meds to insure I wouldn't contract Malaria. They told me, "Don't give blood for three years" and dummy here jumped the gun a bit. (I've a "live saver donor" who gives blood very frequently -- as frequently as they will allow to be honest. Welllllll, no more! My jumping the time interval resulted in an "indeterminate result" on a Western Blot test. Just that one time, however. The next time I gave blood everything was fine. BUT THEN OUR GOVERNMENT, in it's infinite wisdumb, decided ANY indeterminate result in a donor's history would disqualify them forever. And you thought only herpes lasted forever. I've tried political channels to get this fixed as has the blood bank to no avail. I'm heart broken.

this has been a great thread - I have wondered the same because I regularly donated before my clot. I wonder then if they do tests on donated blood that determines my blood is fast clotting. Did I just give people F5?

Having a known genetic clotting disorder does not prevent you from being a blood donor candidate. It's being on anticoagulant medication that stop you. Dr. Moll explains this more indepth at:

Jenny, in regards to what vdolmstead replied. You are definitely a NO GO on being plasma donor. Once you have been on anti coagulants that puts you on the reject list for life. That's according to the federal rules and regulations that mandate a persons eligibility to donate. Like I posted earlier my daughter works in a place that does plasma donations and this is information she has passed along to me.

According to Hematology and the Red Cross, you can not donate blood while on Coumadin/ Warfarin, etc., however, once you've been off for 7 days you are eligible to donate.
