I am on a diuretic because of my blood pressure but NEVER have I been asked by a doctor to take a diuretic due to having a DVT and I have had three so far and have been seen by many different doctors over the years.
Two of those doctors were specialists. I would definitely question the use of a diuretic for DVT. Maybe other people might have a different response.

I don't know that diuretics are really used for DVT swelling. I mean you could try it to see if it works but you'll need to stay hydrated since it can cause dehydration. The up side is that going to the bathroom frequently means you'll be getting up and walking around which is frankly, the best thing we can do after a DVT.

I don't know. Is your re-check doctor the same as your GP? If not, you could run it by your GP to see what she thinks.

My dad's GP gave him a diuretic to decrease leg swellingbut it wasn't due to a DVT, it was post-surgical.

Have you been wearing compression stockings and they aren't doing the trick?

I did some research on DVT and diuretics and cannot find anything to support the use of a diuretic to reduce the swelling for DVT.
The standard protocol is Lovenox and Warfarin (Coumadin)
No where have I read about using a diuretic.

All of your comments are helpful to me. I don't feel so crazy now because I hadn't read about a diuretic for DVT, either. My doctor suggested I use an ace wrap for my leg swelling- foot to knee. I tried a couple times but then I had a foot cramp! I should check into the compression stockings. My doctor for my DVT is my GP. The pharmacist told me to stay near a bathroom and that I could feel a little dizzy due to a small drop in BP from the diuretic so I haven't taken it. Tomorrow I am off of work and thought I could try it to see the side effects but I'm actually hesitant. I hate to screw around with my body any more than needed but I want to heal well from the clots- they affected 4 veins in the knee region! I am also seeing an endocrinologist due to thyroid cancer and had thyroid removed in 2007 so I get worried about all of the effects of meds. I may not start the diuretic, at least yet, my gut is telling me to look into it more, especially after all of your helpful advice! Thank you again.

I'm still not finding anything online to support a diuretic. In fact, since taking a diuretic can lead to dehydration just as rmb stated, it seems contraindicated. I read dehydration is a risk factor for a DVT. Nothing like your own doctor confusing you. I think I'll talk to him more about it. I don't want to be scared trying to take something and hoping it helps and not hurts.

Doctors don't know everything and some don't know enough about DVT. I went to my doctor yesterday because she wanted to discuss putting me on one of the newer anticoags. Before she even opened her mouth I told her that I would stick with the Warfarin. I told her that I had done a lot of research on the new anti-coags and decided against them. She agreed that there is no reversal agent yet on the new drugs. She finally got my records from my old doctor and I had been on a very low dosage of Warfarin. So, last Monday was the last time I had a pill. I am off Warfarin until I get another blood test done on Monday as yesterday's (Friday) was still at 4.1. The doctor asked me if wanted to see a specialist. I think I was too much for her. The doctors follow a standard protocol but I have a rare blood type and most likely that protocol is not good for me.
If we can get the dosage right, and now I do have that info, I will stick with my GP as she is only a 5 minute drive away. I like her too. She was willing to listen to me and my concerns and take me seriously.
Also, dehydration is sometimes a cause of a DVT so why would your doctor recommend a diuretic????

My mom says take it early evening then you will be home sleeping when it kicks in.. Umm yeah cause you want to lose sleep on top of it all? LOL Best of luck to ya.

Diuretic sounds like a major contradiction to anything I've ever been told about staying over hydrated whilst combating DVT/PE.
