are long flights safe?

I have been invited to make a trip next year that would involve a non-stop 14 hour flight. The specialist has said I could do it with a shot the day before travel, the day of travel and the day of arrival in each direction. I can't remember the name of the drug - some kind of anti coagulant, I think?

Has anybody traveled this far after DVT? Mine was in 2008, femoral vein, pelvis to ankle and I'm now diagnosed with post thrombotic syndrome.

I'd like to make this trip but feel pretty anxious about it at the same time. I can't imagine drinking liquids, moving my legs, and not sleeping for 14 hours.

The anticoagulant injections would be a good course to take. Then it's just a matter of getting up, moving around, drinking water, etc. I think sleeping is ok, but I've been on flights that long and it's hard to really get decent sleep anyway.

You're going to be well anticoagulated with those injections.

Boy if I could trade places with you, I'd do it in a second. I think it's fantastic that you have this opportunity.

I agree with rmb. Lovenox traditionally is what is used or another low-molecular weight heparin.

You're probably going to be way more safe than anyone else on the flight because you'll have the shots and you'll be alert to how to prevent clots.

Me personally, I'm planning a trip to Singapore in January, so we'll be doing about 24 hours of travel. Not worried about it from a clot perspective at all.

Take the opportunity and run with it!

Six months after my son had a clot from his heart to below his knee (spent 2 wks in ICU) he went on a 15 hour bus ride with school. I was apprehensive about him taking the trip. But the MD said, "if he gets a shot of lovenox the risk of him getting a clot will be less than anyone else on that bus".

Wow what a great opportunity. Lovonox is the way to go. Never been on a flight that long before. but been flying for five hrs. one more quick heads up. would touch base with the doc about taking 81 asa aspirin . every little bit helps .

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
