Yes, it was hard to not be able to get on DS Christmas eve to talk to friends in need, but I'm not entirely sure this was a DS problem. Netflix, Amazon and a number of other sites were down last night.

Hmmmm ........ Does it require a lot of hands on attention to keep the site running? And they gave everyone Christmas Eve off?
If they DID have any idea that was going to happen, shame on them for not warning us ahead of time!!!

This is not a further complaint, but I would like to know what causes servers to go down. Not just here, but anywhere, any time that happens.

I sent a complaint letter last night and here is the reply I just got..........

We do apologize for your frustration, but this particular incidence was not the
result of anything in DailyStrength's control.

The hosting server was down, and included other major sites such as Netflix. It
does seem to be restored at this time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during the outage.

I hope you find DS to be a place where you can obtain positive support.

if it was the hosting server that hosts not only ds but other sites such as netflix as well , then they are correct. there was nothing that ds could have done to prevent it or fix it. that fell on the tech people of the hosting server not DS.

I'll still be slightly snotty and suggest that DS might have sent everyone that same message, the way they do the occasional 'Message from TEAM DS', but I sincerely appreciate a recognition of my frustration!!!!!

(And maybe sending out a form message to everyone isn't as easy as it seems to me like it would be.)

That would be cool if having gotten knocked off and then put back on would somehow correct the 'no Email alert' problem!!!!!!

I think you could be a little kinder to DS and just be glad they didn't go offline permanently.

If they did, where would you go? To whom would you complain? You keep coming back here so they must be doing something right.

I couldn't get on at all Christmas Eve/Day. If DS have a host service that provides that much downtime, then that host service doesn't have a good contingency plan and sounds like change is needed.

And I DO say nice things about DS on this board, as well.
I don't 'just' criticize them and complain about the continuing problems.

They're asking for feedback here, presumably to maintain the integrity of the site and to look for ways to improve it.

And that's what we're supplying.

Perhaps you just haven't come across some of the posts that praise DS as well as bring up ongoing problems.
They get a lot of kudos here, as well as complaints!!!!
And the site is highly praised , in general.

And they are always thanked when they come and address issues and keep us in the loop as to what is going on!!!
We, or at least *I*, GREATLY appreciate them when they do that!!!!

I really think this board gives a fair and balanced view of all that's going on!!!

hi, I could not get on Christmas Eve at night (UK time) and I sent in an urgent message to DS - I got an acknowledgement that it was being worked on - it looks as if the Ops team were working on it for some time before I sent my message - so, yes, it seems they were aware and working on it.

I think it's the longest outage I've known as it was off beyond lunchtime in the UK when I went out. Horrible timing.

I hope this will mean DS get the resources they need to sort it out. I'm convinced the e-mail problems and the multiple posts, outages etc are one of the reasons why page views are going down on DS year on year.

Again..............no one is leaving. We are still hanging around and waiting for DS to get back to what ever normal is normal.

Very good question,I was wondering the same thing! I couldn't believe that,of all days,DS would go down on Christmas Eve! I tried many times,and finally gave up after a while when I realized I really wasn't going to be able to get on! I was really bumming myself,so I can only imagine what happened to people who may have been having a really hard time around the holidays! They can be truly devestating as it is,and they really needed to get it fixed ASAP! I'm hoping and praying that it doesn't happen again anytime soon!
