What kind of pain? Like, pain in your abdomen or pain when you wipe?

Speaking for my husband. He has episodes of severe abdominal pain after a bowel movement. No trouble with the B.M. itself but for some reason it sets of a several day attack of severe abdominal pain an nausea and near inability to eat. The last two times this has happened ended up going to the ER to make sure there was no perforation, obstruction etc. A liter of fluid, a couple doses of dilaudid and Zofran later he is better enough to go home and things seem to get better after that. I guess best bet is to get in sooner than planned (Sept) to his GI to discuss a plan as to what to do when this happens besides having to go to the hospital if at all possible.

I think what to take would depend on what's causing his pain. Do they think it's like a spasm or something like that, or is it from inflammation? I agree that his doctor needs to come up with a treatment plan for this. You could try calling his GI office, talk to a nurse and tell them the pain is ongoing and you're not sure he can wait until September to see his GI.

If your husband is having abdominal pain after a bowel movement and he has nausea and went to the ER he should be seeing a GI tomorrow and not in September. These are symptoms that need to be seen by an experience GI "now". When he was at the hospital did they do any CT scans/MRI scans of both the lower and upper GI track with contrast or did they even do a colonoscopy? Any respectful GI would know that this is very serious and should make time to see your husband tomorrow or recommend him to someone that is available. If not then you need to get to a different GI. What part of the country do you live in? There is the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, John Hopkins, Massachusetts General and UCLA on the West Coast. If possible your husband should be seen at a respected teaching hospital. Please keep us updated that your husband was seen. Again this is serious and something that you should not wait for two months.

i had the cramping and nausea with BM's with a bad flare in the past. it is horrible, makes a person anxious about going to the bathroom, knowing what is coming next.

when I got out of the flare, this stopped. I wish i had advice. I hope that it is at least helpful to know it happens to other people.

Yes they did a CT that night and it did show a flare but all they did was tell him to call his GI doctor. He was already on prednisone so they had no other specific advice for him until the doctor got back to town. He is much better now after getting his anxiety addressed (flare probably due to increased anxiety recently and then the vicious cycle of more anxiety because you're in a flare) They did move up his appt to about 2 weeks from now. He is still taking prednisone 10mg daily.

medicmom5, I'm glad they were able to bump up his appointment and that he's doing better now that he's addressing the anxiety.

I know when I'm flaring, my anxiety amps up and too, if I've had long periods of high stress, that can trigger my disease to act up, so I think stress and anxiety need to be managed as much as the disease. I work really hard at keeping myself mentally together especially during a flare. It's so easy to just slide into that black hole. Once that happens I'm no good to anyone, particularly myself.
