Hello everyone,

So I am about 2 months into my diagnosis of "indeterminate inflammatory bowel disease" and just went back to the doctor yesterday. He had me on 1000mg canasa suppositories at night since my colonoscopy. My mucous and blood are gone but still have issues with urgency and occasional pain. He decided to keep me on the Canasa and add 4 pills of Lialda each morning and to see him again in 6 weeks (also blood test before and 3 weeks into treatment).

So my question to all of you is what are you experiences with Lialda? Any negative side effects, was it effective, anything else I should know? Hope everyone else out there is doing well.

Hi, I didn't have any side effects. It just didn't work for me, but I know some people here have had success with it.

I never had any issues with Lialda per se. It just never worked for me at all. Fortunately, I never had to pay for it, as my doc always gave me samples.

Now, if he would only give me samples of MM. That's what I have to pay for out of pocket! Fortunately, it seems to be working and I now have it grown for me at no cost.

I am on 2 Lialda in the morning and 2 with dinner, at least thru the holidays. Then I will go back to 2 in the morning. No side effects, but I would prefer to not take meds. My goal is to cut down to 1 per day and eventually off all together. I also take 2000 mg of curcumin (per my GI) and low dose naltrexone.
I'm also on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) all at my GIs recommendation. Colonoscopy on Tuesday showed that I am HEALING! I suggest you look into SCD and LDN.

Yes, I am back on Lialda and it makes my hair fall out and my liver enzymes go up, which is a normal side affect for that medication. I went off of it only to have a bad flair up three month later so new GI put me back on it, but it doesn't seem to be working second time around, so have appt in 2 weeks to see GI Dr for new medication.

sorry about the side effect about your hair falling, there are horrible side effects, but when the hair falls out, that is like saying, I am not well, and everyone can see it...I do hope you have better luck with your new medication.

Yes I did have a terrible reaction to lialda. I don't think I've ever been so close to death as when I took it. I was practically paralyzed with fatique and dizziness. It did empty my bowels though. My doctor told me that a small percentage of colitis patients have a bad reaction to this drug. You will probably be OK since canasa helped you. I also had a very bad experience that as well. I envy those of you who can take so many of these ibd medications. mm

i have taken a different brand of mesalamine, and don't tolerate it well, but my GI insists that bad reactions are rare. It worsened my cramping, diarrhea, etc, and made my hair fall out. it's been falling out for 7 months now, and not showing signs of growing back. i stopped taking it about a month ago - when i stopped eating wheat, my symptoms disappeared and i was able to stop all my meds.

For me, Lialda works great. I was on Asacol originally, but that stopped working. I've also been on and off prednisone for bad UC flares. Since I've been on Lialda (about a year or so now) I have been feeling really good, with no side effects at all. Hope it works for you.

Lialda and all Mesalamine medication that I have used has given me
extreme abdominal pain pancreas reactions.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
