I was diagnosed with moderate ulcerative colitis about 15 years ago and there is nothing I don’t or can’t do. There are times of active disease and times I’ve been sick and sometimes you may need to change medications. How it affects your life depends a lot on the extent of the disease, how you respond to medications, etc.

It can be overwhelming at times. For me, it was a relief to get the diagnosis because I was so sick for a couple of years with no answers. So knowing what is was and learning all I could about it made me feel a bit more empowered and in control.

Rmb is right, it should get easier now that they know what you have and can start you on meds, it was rough in the beginning but I still work and still go out and still enjoy the same things I used to, just have patience and try making a chart of what you eat so you know what bothers you and what doesn't.

Also, were you diagnosed with Colitis or Ulcerative Colitis, because they're different from each other.

ElderCaretaker - Hang in there. The beginning is scary and frustrating, but it will get better. You will be able to do what you want to do. You will figure out how to accommodate/be prepared for whatever your gut throws your way. I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 1982 at 18. You will be able to get married, have kids, have a career. You will learn how to make it work. I carry a pack of wipes and an extra pair of undies in a ziplock bag in my purse, for emergencies. I don't often have to use them, but they give me comfort to know I have them, if I need them. I have AmodiumAD pills stashed everywhere - in my purse, my car, etc. . You can do this. You will just learn to plan ahead. I try to plan for the worse case scenario, just in case. Then go out and do what you want to do and have fun.
