Terry Pratchet - Diskworld series. VERRRRy funny series of books
Cervantes - Don Quixote classic tale of the loony Don who had delusions and battled windmills believing them giants. Laugh out loud kind of stuff.
Roddy Doyle - Irish author......best work "Paddy Clark ha ha" A grade 7 boys mixed up view of his parents divorce and his views of why things actually happen.
Carl Hiassen - Several novels, all set in Florida, and an all bizarre quirky cast of characters in every book. This guy is a master.
Bruce Robinson - The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman. only novel he has put out but this is quality humour.
Simon Shaw - Killer Cinderella - The protagonists wife is cheating on him, so in a fit of rage he kills her. Now he is fearful of being caught by his wifes lover who happens to be dull witted and terribly near sighted... So he begins to dress up as his wife to fool the man into believing she is still alive and begins carrying on the bizzare romance in his wifes stead. Absolutely crazy funny.
Also by Simon Shaw, Murder out of tune........the titles do not seem like comedy but I assure you they are.
James Herriot - It shouldn't happen to a vet. Country vet, Vet on the run.....severa others. All exploits of an "out of place" veterinarian and the hilarious troubles, and people he meets on hijs rounds when fresh out of Vet school and trying to make his name in the business with a fussy peculiar boss and his carousing alcoholic brother.
Anyone else got anything to kick in? Doesn't have to be humour, it's just a kick I'm on right now in trying to cheer myself up. Anything will do though, I'm always looking for new great authors to read.

I would suggest Orange is the New Black. The book itself is not terribly funny but some of the stuff on the TV show is hillfuckalarious!

I really should pick one up and read it. I have quite a few old books here that I have never read. I was never the best reader in the world. I did my share to get through my college career!!
I probably know what you are going to say. I had pretty much the same view it would be a cold day in before then I received one as a gift. They are really rather neat and far more convenient than I thought. They also have the advantage of being able to be zoomed (increase text size), adjusting the light so they are always readable under any condition, ability to immediately lookup words, ability to contain a large library in one small package, etc.
You can get an awful lot of free e-books off the internet too. There is one particular site called Project Gutenberg that has any book older than I think 60 years, where the copyright has gone past. All of Charles Dickens, all of Mark Twain, Cervantez , you name it. All the classics there for the taking if you want it.
So, for anyone with a cell phone, of the type called "smart phones", the kind with the screen on the front.there is an application called "cool reader" it is free, and the ebooks are free from Gutenberg and this application will read the books to you in a shockingly human voice. Not the computerised voice of yesteryear, but a voice that actually goes up like a human voice when a question is asked,.... sounds amazing. And though it's not perfectly human, it's still having a book read to you and no one has done that for me since I was about 5 so it's nice. And convenient, since my car radio is now dormant.
Yeah, Kurt Vonnegut is awesome. And the best thing is I've only read 2 of his books so I've got a few more to go.
- Funny you should have mentioned David Sedaris. I had read the name here in this thread earlier today. Opened a folder of podcasts my friend sent me to listen to and there was a David Sedaris folder in the lot. There's a fancy word for such a coincidence which I can't quite remember, when something you've never heard of before is mentioned and BANG, out of nowhere the very thing falls into your lap .... but no surprise there, the not remembering bit that is because I couldn't remember where I'd heard the name David Sedaris for a few minutes either......Seems it takes a few minutes to remember most things these days. Maybe the hard drive in my head is getting full. Anyways, I eventually remembered I'd heard it here.
Well, I've lots to occupy me now anyways. The little 8g USB drive has a few hundred hours of mp3 podcasts on ancient roman, greek and Egyptian history and some humour and other entertainment as well. I'm well pleased.
