*****Bottom line to this study is that NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is a useful tool to use in the battle against COPD. It helps you breathe better and are more physically able to do things. Personally, I have taken 1200 mg. daily for some 2 years now. I found a big reduction in mucous production (especially in the morning when it was worse), with no adverse side effects. It's also an excellent anti-toxin. It's found in health food stores or over the internet.*******

BACKGROUND:
FEV(1) is used for the classification of disease severity and is a good
predictor of COPD mortality. However, it is a poor predictor of clinical
symptoms, exercise tolerance, and response to bronchodilators in COPD.
Progressive reduction in inspiratory capacity (IC) during exercise reflects
dynamic hyperinflation and is a good predictor of decreased exercise ability as well as increased exertional dyspnea. In animal models of COPD, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant/ mucous modifier, has been shown to modify small airways, which mainly causes lung hyperinflation.
OBJECTIVE:
Our goal was to examine the effect of 1,200 mg/d of NAC on lung
hyperinflation at rest and after exercise in patients with
moderate-to- severe COPD.
METHODS:
This was a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study that included 24
eligible patients > 40 years of age with a diagnosis of COPD, a FEV(1) < 70% of predicted, FEV(1)/FVC ratio < 0.70, and a functional residual capacity > 120% of predicted normal. Patients were randomized to placebo treatment orNAC treatment twice daily for 6 weeks. This was followed by a 2-week washout period, and then patients were crossed over to alternate therapy for an additional 6 weeks. Evaluation was performed after each 6 weeks of each treatment.
RESULTS:
IC and FVC were higher especially after exercise after NAC treatment
compared with placebo treatment. In addition, the relationship of residual
volume to total lung capacity was reduced in a similar pattern. Furthermore, endurance time was longer after NAC treatment compared with placebo treatment.
CONCLUSIONS:
NAC treatment of patients with stable, moderate-to- severe COPD has a
beneficial effect on physical performance, probably due to a reduction in
air trapping.

There lies my point! People need to know the pluses and negatives! It's important to know that this stuff has dangerous toxic effects. Which I only posted one! There are many others! And as can be seen from the old post I found, only 3 replies and they were all negative. Yet you and your buddy kindly insulted me and anyone that had something to say!
And Pearl, I wouldn't worry too much about the mice! The bottom paragraph states they ran the same tests on humans at lower doses with the same negative results!
Albuterol works real good getting lungs cleared. If you don't like it, there are many other doctor prescribed meds or just plain Mucinex (at a couple dollars a bottle) works good! But whoever chooses to use this stuff, deserves to know there are serious side effects!

Just where in this post did someone insult you? Did I call you names? Did I refer to you as an "It"? That dehumanizes, demoralizes and degrades another. Did I refer to you as an "old bitty"? That's rather insulting. Did they they response to your post as not knowing "you got free therapy with every post". Is this what you term "respectful"? Or is this "excusable"?
You wrote these things where it could be easily seen. So, please straighten out your own backyard before you complain about another.

Try practicing what you so adamantly preach.
And if you want to fight, you'll need to find another sparring partner, I've got better things to do.
That was alluding to a fact that every drug is usually tested on mice and sometimes a good drug can be held back on approval by the FDA. This has been talked about in various ways since I became a member but no one ever called me on it before.
I can see that you resent a couple of us that post and that is certainly your privilege but I can't see why. Yes, I read your reasons but are we now taking bets on who has the best answer?
So sometimes the discussions get a little heated, so what, we are all adults here and we are all affected by moods and that is sometimes reflected in our posts. And sometimes, we just disagree but I have found that sometimes there is something good at the end of the post and we always get past the disagreements.
I know that I am going to be seen as a troublemaker just because I questioned you but I guess I will just have to take that heat. After all you were angry enough to drop me as a friend, which was an explanation that I got.
I apologize to those that really don't like these kind of posts but they have happened before and they will happen again.
That is the nature of a different mix of people and I understand this. And I always come back to this forum where I actually do learn a lot about managing my disease.
