COPD & Emphysema Support Group
COPD is a progressive disease characterized by airflow obstruction or limitation. Emphysema is characterized by loss of elasticity of the lung tissue, destruction of structures supporting the alveoli and of capillaries feeding the alveoli. Both have symptoms that include shortness of breath, among other respiratory troubles. If you are a COPD or Emphysema sufferer, join...
I also have CHF (among other things).....and I try to force myself (someday's) NOT to go back to bed so maybe I can sleep at night.........like ALL night.......sometimes it works......sometimes it doesn't :(
Sleep is soooooooooo important they say........but getting it can be pretty hard:(:(
Hoping you get some sleep tonight..............I am about to make my first trip to bed in a few minutes............hopefully I won't be back here in an hour.............LOL
My new pulmo wasn't at all worried, either; because I had had polio in 1951 as a toddler, so that may be partly to blame, he said. No matter to whom you express your feelings of fatigue (doc, family, or friend), they seem to totally dismiss that as a symptom and major burden. Yeah, there's that Rodney feeling again--marginalized and dissed.
So...I think we in this COPD boat all have problems getting comfy enough to fall asleep, then sleep for long periods for restorative rest. I actually feel SICK when I don't get enough sleep in a 24-hour period. Most days, I get up to let the dog out and feed her breakfast, then turn around and nap on the couch to get close to 8 hours sleep. This is regarded as shamful laziness by my bullying neighbors!
For us gals, menopause may have set us off on a dangerous path of insomnia and broken sleep patterns--I think I have been tired ever since then, and unable to establish normal sleep where I don't awaken every couple of hours, after battling to fall asleep in the first place.
Wish I knew what to do about it--if our docs don't take it seriously, maybe it's NOT detrimental to our health, just very akin to torture. And no one gives a rodent's rectum about the travails of middle-aged females in America.....right, Rodney?
Hey, thanks for the opportunity to vent, people. At least I tried to put a bit of humor in it... I hope all my fellow COPD travelers are snug in bed, comfy, warm and safe tonight--and sound asleep, too.
This can drive you crazy no energy to do anything. Here it is midnight and still up will go back to bed for a few hours then up again. I wish we could find out what to do to help this. I blame it on the copd.
God bless
Did you notice, it's all women so far about the fatigue?? And i think we are all around the same age too, maybe it is the after effects of menopause!
But, i wake up and after a cup of java at 4am , i actually feel pretty damn rested. But around 6am i start getting tired again, to go back to sleep.
I don't know if i'm getting worse, i would like to feel that i'm breathing better, as my O2 sat numbers are getting better, and im on the bi pap machine. I just can't seem to STAY asleep. But when i do sleep, i'm out like a light!

I'm not on any new meds since all this happened. Except for symbicort...I'm sure we'll review my meds, Pulm, and Cardiac Dr's, once I have the tests i need done.

Going to try to go to sleep. IT's 11:44pm, we'll see how long i sleep!
Wishes for all of you to have a nice, peaceful sleep....with beautiful angels looking over ALL OF YOU!!

God bless
I guess i sleep in 3 shifts...12am or 1am, for 3 or 4 hours, then 7am until 10 am, and then a nap from 2 until 5pm. Thank goodness Mom isn't here, but being alone, easy to take an afternoon nap.
Question, besides inhalers,s are there any meds that Dr's have put any of you on, that makes you feel any better? I know that probably most of you on O2, said "I don't wanna be on oxygen, the rest of my life", and i feel that way right now, but i have to face the fact, that they caught this, and i very well may have to live with oxygen for a long time . That way if i do go off it, i'll be surprised.
Right now, I'm on Symbicort, (twice a day 160/4.5, )and Albuterol ....as needed.
Ok, any takers on commenting about these questions? ALso, what do they do during Pulmonary Rehab? or Respiratory Rehab?
Boo
Sorry about you not getting much sleep. It could be meds, copd, or quitting smoking, or all combined!! We all go thru that, I guess it is a copd thing.
I go to bed early but do not go to sleep until maybe an hour or so later, then wake up about 2-3 am to go to the bathroom, then back to sleep.
I use to take ambien, but was becoming to dependent on them, so I stopped. They worked great, I would get drowsey, go to sleep, but still wake up at 2-3 for the bathroom!!
But I noticed when I did not take one, I was wide awake all night!!! So I quit them. Now I read until my eyes are droopy, then go to sleep just fine.
If a person is not sleepy, they are not going to go to sleep regardless, and some experts have said tht if you are not dozing off within 30 minutes, you should get out of bed and read a boreing book.
I just read whatever I can find!!!
Pulmonary rehab is exercises to build your auxilliary muscles and leg muscles up . As your lung unction goes, the diaphragm, that helps your lungs to move, gets lax, and you need to use your auxillary muscles in order to breath, and keep your lungs moving best they can.
Your legs have the largest muscles, thus will use more oxygen, so you need to keep them built up in order to get from point a to point b, or you will not be able to walk. Unused muscles require more oxygen than toned muscles, and all the oxygen you are useing is going to your lungs to keep you alive, if you have bad muscle tone, and divert the oxygen, you are sob and will get worse.
It also teaches you proper breathing. Remember the lazzy diaphram? Well you should be breathing from that, like this. Take a deep breath, but tighten your stomach muscles, then when you exhale, purse your lips like you are going to kiss smeone on the cheek and slowly exhale.
THIS BRINGS GOOD AIR IN AND LETS BAD AIR OUT We retain co2 , so we need to get it out . Google "Purse lip Brething" and it will explain it better.
Speaking of rehab, I have to go, so have a good weekend
