Common Variable Immunodeficiency Support Group
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.
What that mean is that I inject myself with small amounts several times a week. I inject 5 10cc vials a week. When I started four years ago I did it five days a week (each vial is 10. Now I double up two days - 20 cc Sat & Tues, 10 cc Thurs. My doc says I could do it once a week in two sites if I want but I prefer to spread it out.
When I started I used my stomach, now I use my outer thigh. I'm a leaner person so that works better for me (you inject into fat, not muscle). I think 'pushing' 50 cc in one go would be painful (and lumpy !).
I think the idea is that it levels out better - less peak and then drop in the IgG levels. I suspect they can use a bit lower dose too. Two years ago I was bumped up to 6 vials but then put back down. When I do get sick, I stay sick longer than everyone else in my house - and it seems to get worse just before a needle. When I was on 6 vials I think I beat things faster.
